People had fallen, and one by one they were introduced to the room. There were some quiet conversations between Dauntless members as we waited for each initiate. Eventually, everyone had jumped and joined the group. The man from the net and another woman with long hair walked before the group. "Dauntless-born, go with Lauren, transfers stay with me," said the man. I watched as Lauren stepped to the side and the Dauntless-borns followed her. Once they were out of view he spoke again, "Most of the time I work in Intelligence, but during your training, I'll be your instructor."
He was almost mesmerizing as he walked back and forth in front of the group of transfers. His voice was smooth and low, "My name's Four."
"Four like the number?" I asked curiously before I could really think about it. For someone to be named a number, or even nicknamed a number, it had to mean something.
His eyes found mine there was an almost unnoticeable smile on his face, "Exactly like the number."
Christina spoke up after he answered, "What happened, one through three were taken?" Her Candor was in full effect right now. My hand quickly moved to my face to cover the smile that was threatening to show.
Four smiled a humorless smile and removed his eyes from mine as he glanced at the ground and then back up at Christina. "What's your name?" He asked.
She pursed her lips and replied simply, "Christina."
He let out a short laugh and stepped forward until he was standing directly in front of her. "Well, Christina," he said as he towered over her, "the first lesson you learn from me, if you wanna survive here, is keep your mouth shut. Do you understand me?"
Christina looked up at him, very clearly intimidated. "Yes," she whispered.
"Good," he replied and looked up at the group. His eyes found mine once again before he turned and stalked off. After a few paces, he glanced back at the group and spoke again, "Follow me."
As the group of transfers started moving forward to follow Four, I caught up to Christina. "Hey, Chris, try not to piss off our instructor before he can even teach us anything," I said softly and laughed quietly as I walked next to her, Tris joining me at my side.
"Sorry, I can't help it," she replied sheepishly as we walked through a doorway and into a hallway. The walls were made of concrete and jagged stones stuck out at different angles. The hall was cold and dark as our footsteps echoed through it.
Al joined Christina's other side and slung an arm over her shoulder. "Keep talking like that and you'll be making us run laps," he joked. Chris and Al seemed to already be friends just like Tris and I were.
The girls laughed at Al's jab as we came to a staircase. It was a spiral staircase and the lights above it were red. It was a little eerie as we each made the descent down it. The end of the staircase opened up to a large hallway and the sound of loud music, people, and cheering came from the end of it.
We all continued to walk towards where the hallway opened up. "This is The Pit. The center of life here at Dauntless," came Four's explanation. The group came to the edge of the walkway which, by looking around, only sometimes had railings.
The Pit was magnificent. It was a ginormous ravine that had a glass roof. The sunlight poured through the ceiling and bounced off the different ledges and walkways that lined the walls.
People were everywhere. Sitting on the ledges. Fighting in circles on the floor. Dancing with their friends. Music was playing throughout The Pit and it rang throughout in a way that was like glitter for my ears.
