Silent Apologies

"What do you want?"
I ask him, feeling exhausted.

"You," he replies, looking at me.

"Yeah, get to the point, not all of us have your enthusiasm!"

"What happened?"
He asks as he approaches me.

"Lucas, I'm tired of you!"
I respond.

"What happened out of the blue with me? What did I do?"

"Many things, and you know it. I don't need to waste any more of my time."

"I see, you don't want to forgive me?"
He answers, looking at me as if he's joking. Does he think I'm an idiot?

"Lucas, just stop with the nonsense, okay? Aren't you tired of mocking me?"

"What did I do, Emma? I apologized!"
He replies, looking me in the eyes.

"An apology for the mockery? For which one? You've done so many things and you just keep doing more!"

"I said it was a mistake, Emma! What else do you want me to do?!"
He raises his voice now too.

"No, the mistake was falling for you!"
I shout angrily, and he looks at me, taken aback.

As soon as I realize what I said, I curse myself and look at him.

"Just forget it!"
I say calmly, and he moves closer to me.

"Emma, what did you say?"
He asks, staring at me.

"Nothing, forget it."
I reply, lowering my head.

"What's happening now cannot be undone. You've driven me crazy, damn it! What did I do to you that you're attacking me like this?"

"I saw you with Lydia earlier."
I tell him, and he looks at me.

"Did you hear what we said?"

"No, but I saw what you did!"
I reply calmly.

"And then you left?"

I nod my head affirmatively and look at him.
"Maybe you should have stayed to see and hear what we talked about."

"I'm not interested in your dating games, Lucas."

"They're not dating games, Emma! Since you came into my life, you've changed my whole world. You've changed me! Can't you see what you've done to me?"

"I didn't do that, Lucas..."
I reply, moving away from him.

He grabs my hand and pulls me closer.
"This time, I won't let you go," he says as he caresses my cheek.
I know what's coming next. I think we all know now...

He kisses me, pressing me against him.
We had agreed not to do this again... but it seems neither of us is going to keep that promise.

It's wrong...

He stops kissing me and looks into my eyes.
"I don't want Lydia, I never wanted her. What I want is you!"
He explains.

He says this, and I look at him.
"There can't be anything between us, Lucas. It just can't happen."

"Why can't it happen?"
He asks.

"Because we're different. You like her, but I like you."

"I don't understand you, Emma..."

"Lucas, it's better if we end it here."
I tell him, looking into his disappointed eyes.

"This isn't something you can just say, Emma! We're in the same school, the same class, the same desk, and now in the same friend group. We see each other every day, it's not possible."

He's right, but I don't think it would be right for Lucas and me to get into a relationship...

"I know, but..."

"But what? Are you going to act like everything's okay? Like nothing is happening between us? I won't accept that when you're messing with my thoughts!"

He says, unlocking the door and leaving...

I leave the school and head home.
