FIRST PERSON

after what felt like an eternity of sitting at mr burner's desk while he explained what i needed to catch up on during the school holidays, it was finally lunch. luckily for me, cami and effie invited me to sit with them at lunch. i was kind of surprised when they told me it was just them, and they didn't have a friendgroup. i guess all the american high school movies got to my head, because i expected there to be weird cliques and food fights in the cafeteria or something. boy, was i wrong. it was without a doubt, the most boring lunch ever. well... that was until i spotted a certain someone a few feet away from me as i sat down with my friends. the brunette was at the front of the cafeteria, putting food on her tray.

it shocked me a little when she walked past us and shot a wave at effie. this is embarrassing to admit, but i thought she was waving at me at first. thank the lord i didn't wave back. but it did make me realise i finally had an opportunity to find out who this girl was.

"who was that?" i asked effie, trying not to sound too curious. i didn't wanna come off as a creep or a weirdo, although i'm pretty sure the mystery girl already thought i was. i probably should've waited for effie to chew and swallow the last bite of her caeser salad, because the silence as i waited for her to respond was incredibly awkward. as effie tried speeding up a little so she could open her mouth and answer, cami chuckled a little to break the silence, but i honestly think that might've made it worse. 'so much for a good first impression, ruby! great job.' i sarcastically thought to myself. finally, effie finished her slow chewing and swallowed.

"that's lynn. lynn loud. she's on my basketball team!" effie said politely. i wondered why effie didn't sit with the whole basketball team, although it didn't seem like lynn did either. i looked over my shoulder, trying to spot where lynn was sitting. when my eyes hit her, i saw her sitting with two other girls i didn't recognise. one ginger, and the other a blonde. but unlike cami, it seemed as though this girls hair was natural. the other two girls were wearing the same basketball jersey as lynn. i figured cami noticed me staring over at them, because she opened her mouth to introduce me to them.

"the ginger one is rachel, and the blonde is kylie they're on her team too, but nobody likes them, because they're the biggest drama queens ever. they just gossip about boys and parties... it's so annoying." cami rambled on, effie agreeing with her. clearly they didn't like the other girls very much, and by the sound of them, i wasn't growing too fond of them either. i'm not sure why, but i got this weird feeling of hope that lynn didn't act the same way as her friends, because gossip girls really pissed me off. and i mean really pissed me off.

"lynn's really chill though" effie added on to cami's rant with a nod. "she's really competitive though. she plays like every sport the school has to offer." effie continued, shivering as she spoke. i wasn't gonna lie to myself, lynn sounded scary, but for some reason, i still found myself infatuated with her. maybe it was the way her ponytail swayed every time she moved, or the way her right dimple was more apparent than the left. i wanted to know more about her, and boy, was i glad that she was different from the others, because as soon as my new friends spoke up about her, i knew i wanted to be her friend. i spent the rest of my lunch time zoning out and staring at her from across the room. why was she so perfect? and why was i so nervous to talk to her?

this friend this is hard.
