THIRD PERSON

ruby didn't expect to find any friends in royal woods. in fact, she didn't want to. after the passing of her father, she vowed to herself that she'd never seek comfort in a person that way ever again. it was too risky. all that went through her head when she thought about making new friends were 'what if's, and she hated it. she just wanted to forget about her past and start a new chapter. she no longer wanted to be ruby sinclair.

ruby had only been in royal woods for a couple of days, and she was so nervous to start at a new school tomorrow. she silently hoped and prayed that she could just lay low and go unnoticed by students and teachers, but deep down, she knew that wasn't gonna happen, and that scared the shit out of her. all she wanted was to be a normal sixteen year old girl, but of course that couldn't happen. not for someone like ruby.

it was sunday. well.. technically it was monday, because it was 1:37am. ruby had been tossing and turning all night, trying to block out all of the worst case scenario's that were coulding her mind.

'god, why me?' she though to herself. 'why do i  have to be this way?'

she was sick of it. sick of herself, sick of her life, and sick of royal woods.

fuck royal woods.

ruby got a total of around 3 hours of sleep that night, courtesy of her uncomfortable mattress that was still on the floor, because her damn bed frame hadn't arrived to the new house yet. and of course, her worst enemy, her own mind. ruby had been diagnosed with depression and anxiety a few months ago after her mother practically forced her into therapy to cope with the loss of her dad. they put her on antidepressants, but they didn't seem to be helping. not at all.

as the alarm on her phone she had set the previous day started to ring, ruby groaned and rolled around on her mattress, causing her to accidentally fall off. at least it was close to the ground, i guess... a concussion on her first day of school? yikes. that wouldn't have been fun.

she had been dreading this day, and now that it had come, she realised she was definitely not prepared. she made a small 'oof' sound as she her head the ground, snapping her awake. ruby sat up and rubbed her head, pausing once she realised it was monday.

"fucking mondays." she muttered to herself as she stood up, looking around her very disorganised room. ruby hadn't unpacked much other than the book series she was currently reading and clothing. she couldn't be bothered. just as ruby was about to go take a shower, her mother knocks on the door.

"yeah?" ruby said, indicating it was fine for her mother to enter.

as her mum entered, she looked around the room filled with unopened boxes. ruby could tell what she was about to say. 'you should get to unpacking, honey.' she had only said it about a thousand times in the past few days they had been sitting there. but ruby didn't seem to mind. to be quite honest, she didn't want to see all of her things set up in some strange room she hardly recognised. it didn't feel like home. she didn't want it to be her home. mission beach was her home. and she was having a damn hard time letting go of it.

surely enough, ruby's mum said exactly what she had expected, making her roll her eyes. she was gonna get to it! at some point... she just needed her mum to stop bloody bothering her about it. ruby stood there with her arms crossed, leaning against one of four of her plain white walls in her tiny ass room, listening to her mum rant and rave about unpacking and blah blah blah. she wasn't actually listening though. she was zoning out, thinking about all the things that could go wrong as soon as she walks through those school gates today.

ruby was snapped out of her own head as her mum started clicking her fingers in her face, asking if she was in there. her mother found it quite funny, but looking at her deadpan expression, she could tell that ruby didn't. not at all. ruby's mum was quite frustrated with the fact that ruby's room was still nowhere near unpacked, but she decided to let it go. at least until later on.

"alright" ruby's mum clapped her hands together with a sigh. "time to get ready, honey. don't wanna be late for your first day of school!" she continued.

god, why the hell was she so enthusiastic about this? ruby was practically dying over it, while her mum was over here all happy-go-lucky as if it wasn't her fault she got dragged to this shit-hole of a town anyway. as ruby's mum left the room, she decided she'd go take a quick shower. she didn't wanna smell on her first day. she knew she'd never live it down if she got given some embarrassing nickname that stuck throughout the rest of her highschool years like in every other weird american coming of age movie.

"why'd i have to transfer half-way through the school year" ruby groaned to herself as she hopped into the shower. she liked the feeling of the hot water trickling down her back. it was soothing. at least there was one thing that wouldn't change after she had moved to royal woods. she loved the feeling of hot water on her skin as she listened to her shower playlist on spotify. that combination  was probably the only thing that could soothe her when she was having a bad day.

TIME SKIP

"have a good day, honey" her mum smiled at her and waved as she got out of the car. ruby didn't want to believe this was actually happening. she was trying to ignore the fact that this day was coming ever since she found out she would be moving to royal woods, and now here she was, standing in front of those school gates she had seen for the first time on her principal's tour a couple of days ago, and now she actually had to go here. lord knew this wouldn't be easy. she gave herself a mental 'here i go' as she took a deep breath and walked into the school.

"fuck, sorry!" she cursed as she bumped into someone and had knocked all of their books out of their hands. ruby immediately bent down and tried to help the girl pick up her books. so much for laying low. as she went to reach the last textbook on the floor, her hand met the other girl's, causing some sort of weird reaction in her body. as ruby looked up at the girl's face, she stuttered as she tried to get out a 'sorry'. this girl was unlike anyone she had ever seen. she had beautiful green eyes, and dimples that were incredibly noticeable when she smiled, saying

"no, you're all good!" with a reassuring tone. ruby's eyes widened at the sound of her voice. it was raspy and almost scratchy... she liked it. she liked it a lot. it took her a couple of seconds to realise she was staring, embarrassing her after the girl asked if there was something on her face. as they both stood up, ruby realised how much taller the girl was compared to her. this girl had to have at least five inches on her.

who the hell was this girl? and why was she so damn pretty?
