LYNN'S POV
ruby sat across from me in the cafeteria, far enough for me to just be able to see her face. if i'm honest, i was jealous of how quickly she was able to make friends with cami and effie, getting along with them so well. i watched as they laughed and talked with each other, feeling frustrated that it didn't get to be that way when i was with the girls i called my friends. the only reason i even talk to them is because they're on my basketball team, and nobody else seemed to want to sit with me. i was snapped out of my thoughts when Rachel began clicking her fingers in my face, asking if i was listening. i wasn't interested in their boy drama and shit talking, so i usually just sat there looking miserable as i ate my food in silence. i don't think they even noticed me half the time. they were much closer with each other than with me, they had more common interests.
THIRD PERSON
"i was saying, that new girl is such a loser. don't you agree? what was her name again... rudy or something?" rachel snickered along with kylie. this was lynn's final straw. she tried to explain to the girls that ruby was actually a really nice girl, but they seemed to care more about the gossip and rumors rather than actually listening to what lynn had to say. lynn simply told them both to "fuck off", and got up from the table and left, leaving the two mean girls slightly shocked, but of course they quickly went back to their boy talk and gossip without a second thought. it was pretty clear to them that lynn wouldn't be associating with them anymore after that scene.
RUBY'S POV
as i was sitting down with my friends in the cafeteria, laughing at a cheer fails compilation on youtube that cami had pulled up on her phone, i felt a tap on my shoulder. when i turned around, the person i expected least was standing in front of me.
"can i sit with you guys? i kinda just cut my friends off...." a familiar raspy voice chuckled nervously, speaking softly. of course i didn't turn away, feeling bad that lynn had nobody to sit with anymore. she immediately thanked us and let out a sigh of relief. to be honest, i was kind of glad she asked, because it meant i got to spend a little more time with her. lynn sat down between effie and i, placing her lunch tray down on the table.
"what are you guys watching?" lynn asked us, making cami laugh and pass her the phone. i found it amusing watching lynn's grin grow wider as she watched the video. seeing her dimples again made me nervous, as always. there was just something about her that i couldn't shake off. she was all over me everywhere i went. i wish i could say i didn't mind it, but i did. there was no way i'd ever be able to be with her. i knew she liked girls, but there's no way a girl like her could like a girl like me.
i studied lynn's facial features intently while i had the chance every single time she wasn't looking. i was snapped out of my thoughts when the bell went, meaning i had to be separated from lynn. i'd be lying if i said i wasn't disappointed that we had no classes together, even though it was beneficial when i was trying to avoid her (and failing miserably).
as i headed to her next class, i couldn't help but reflect on the lunch period i just had. sitting next to lynn had stirred up a whole whirlwind of emotions within me, making me both excited and nervous. but i knew that there was no way i could ever be with lynn, i didn't stand a chance. i saw the way other girls looked at her too, she had a whole lineup of girls who were much more beautiful, funny, smart and interesting than me. though she never payed attention to those girls, i couldn't help but feel like she'd end up with one of them rather than me. fuck you, jealousy.
