Ethan continued to go through the motions of family life, but inside, he was preparing for a seismic shift. He spent more time with Lily, encouraging her to express herself through her art and asking about her experiences at school. He could tell she was being bullied, but like him, she was too proud to admit it openly.
One evening, as they sat together in the living room, Ethan gently probed.
"Lily, I know things have been tough for you at school," he said, keeping his tone light. "If you ever want to talk about it, I'm here."
Lily glanced up from her sketchbook, her eyes wide with surprise. "It's not that bad," she said, her voice small.
Ethan raised an eyebrow. "You don't have to pretend. I can see it's bothering you."
She hesitated, then let out a long sigh. "Some of the kids make fun of me... because I'm not like Emma."
Ethan's heart ached. "Not like Emma? What do you mean?"
Lily shrugged, avoiding his gaze. "I'm not pretty like her. I don't care about the same things she does. And... Mom doesn't really pay attention to me."
There it was—the truth Ethan had been dreading to hear, but knew all along.
"Lily, listen to me," he said firmly. "You're beautiful. You're smart, talented, and you have a heart that's bigger than anyone else's in this family. Don't ever think you're less because you're not like Emma or your mom."
Lily looked up at him, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "Do you really mean that?"
"I do," Ethan said, his voice steady. "And you should never let anyone make you feel like you don't matter. Not those kids at school, and definitely not anyone in this house."
For the first time in a long while, Ethan saw a flicker of confidence in Lily's eyes. She smiled, just a little, but it was enough to give him hope.
They sat together for the rest of the evening, the silence between them no longer heavy, but peaceful. Ethan felt a sense of calm he hadn't experienced in months. He knew he was doing the right thing, and now, more than ever, he was determined to protect Lily from the toxic environment they lived in.
But there was still work to do. He couldn't stay in this marriage, not with what he knew about Jessica. And he couldn't let Emma continue down the same path unchecked. Change was coming, and soon.
