Over the next few weeks, Ethan and Samantha began meeting for coffee, their conversations effortlessly picking up where they had left off years ago. They talked about their careers, the tech world, and life in general. Ethan found himself drawn to her warmth and intelligence, and as they spent more time together, he realised how much he had missed having a real connection with someone.
One afternoon, as they sat in a quiet café overlooking the city, Samantha asked about his family. Ethan hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal.
"I'm recently divorced," he said finally. "It's been... complicated."
Samantha gave him a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry to hear that. Divorce is never easy."
"It's been tough, especially with the kids," Ethan admitted. "My oldest daughter, Emma, decided to stay with her mother. She blames me for the divorce."
Samantha nodded, her expression understanding. "That must be hard."
"It is," Ethan said, his voice heavy with emotion. "But I'm trying to focus on Lily. She's the one who needs me the most right now."
Samantha reached across the table and placed her hand on his. "You're a good father, Ethan. I can tell."
Ethan looked into her eyes, feeling a warmth spread through him that he hadn't felt in years. "Thanks," he said softly. "That means a lot."
As they continued talking, Ethan realised that Samantha wasn't just a comforting presence—she was someone he could see himself building something new with. After all the pain and betrayal he had been through, he hadn't expected to find love again. But sitting there with her, he felt a glimmer of hope.
