While Ethan's relationship with Samantha blossomed, his relationship with Emma continued to deteriorate. Despite his attempts to reach out, Emma remained distant, her anger toward him growing with each passing day.

One afternoon, Ethan called Emma, hoping to invite her over for the weekend. When she answered, her voice was cold and unwelcoming.

"What do you want?" Emma snapped.

"I was hoping we could spend some time together," Ethan said cautiously. "Maybe you could come over this weekend?"

"I'm busy," Emma said curtly. "Besides, I don't want to hang out in your new house. It's weird."

Ethan's heart sank. "Emma, I know things are different now, but I still want us to have a relationship. I miss you."

"You should have thought about that before you ruined everything," Emma said bitterly. "You're the reason Mom and I have to live in a smaller house now. You're the reason everything's messed up."

"Emma, that's not fair," Ethan said, trying to keep his voice calm. "I didn't want things to turn out this way, but—"

"I don't care!" Emma interrupted. "I don't want to talk to you."

With that, she hung up, leaving Ethan staring at his phone, feeling the sting of rejection. No matter how hard he tried, Emma refused to see things from his perspective. She had chosen her mother's side, and there was nothing he could do to change that.

Ethan sat there for a long time, the weight of his failed relationship with Emma pressing down on him. He had hoped that with time, things would improve, but now it seemed like the gap between them was only widening.

But even as he struggled with Emma's resentment, he knew he couldn't give up on her. He would keep trying, no matter how painful it was.
