A few days had passed since Johanna had spoken to Amira, and the ship had settled into its usual rhythm. The crew went about their duties, the sound of laughter and chatter filling the air as the Jolly Roger sailed steadily across the open sea.
Killian stood at the helm, his gaze scanning the horizon, but his mind was elsewhere. He had been watching Amira over the past few days, sensing a change in her—a quietness that hadn't been there before, as if something were weighing heavily on her heart. He knew that Johanna had spoken to her, and he hoped that whatever had been bothering Amira was beginning to ease.
Spotting Johanna nearby, Killian called out to her. "Johanna, a word, if you please."
Johanna approached, her eyes filled with curiosity. "What is it, Captain?"
Killian glanced around, making sure no one was within earshot before he spoke, his voice low. "I wanted to ask if you spoke with Amira. I could tell something was troubling her, and I hoped you might have gotten through to her."
Johanna nodded, her expression softening. "I did speak with her, yes. And I know what's been bothering her."
Killian's brows furrowed, a hint of concern crossing his face. "And what might that be?"
Johanna hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "She's comparing herself to someone from your past—someone she feels she could never live up to. It's weighing on her, making her question her place here and how you see her."
Killian's eyes widened slightly in surprise, and he felt a pang of guilt in his chest. He had never meant for Amira to feel that way, never wanted her to doubt her own worth. He had seen her strength, her courage, her kindness, and he admired her for all of it. But it seemed that, somehow, he had failed to make her see that.
He nodded, his expression turning thoughtful. "Thank you, Johanna. I appreciate you looking out for her. I'll need to find a way to make things right."
Johanna gave him a gentle smile. "Just be honest with her, Captain. Let her know how much she means to you. Sometimes, that's all it takes."
Killian watched Johanna walk away, her words echoing in his mind. He knew that she was right—he needed to be honest with Amira, to show her that she was valued for who she was, not for who she reminded him of. And he hoped that, in time, Amira would come to see that as well.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the deck, Amira was sparring with Graham and Briggs, her eyes focused and her movements sharp. She moved with a confidence that belied her youth, her blade striking with precision as she faced her two opponents.
Graham lunged at her, but she sidestepped effortlessly, her sword flashing as she disarmed him with a swift strike. Briggs came at her from the other side, but she spun, her blade catching his, and with a well-timed twist, she sent his sword clattering to the deck.
"Well done, Selena," Graham said, his voice filled with admiration as he picked up his sword. "You're getting faster every day."
Briggs nodded in agreement, a grin on his face. "Aye, Captain's orders or not, you're as good as any of us. Maybe even better."
Amira smiled, her chest swelling with pride at their words. "Thank you, both of you," she said, her voice steady. She had grown used to the name Selena, the identity she had taken on as a pirate. It was a name that gave her strength, that allowed her to step away from her past and embrace the life she had chosen.
As they finished their sparring, Amira sheathed her sword, her thoughts drifting back to the conversation she had had with Johanna. She knew that she still had a lot to figure out, but for now, she was grateful for the support of those around her—the crew, Johanna, and even Killian. They were her family, and she would do whatever it took to protect them.
