Matthew stumbles into the small, 2 bedroom house drunk off his ass and in one of his moods.
"Tina!" He yells standing in the middle of the kitchen.
After a moment, Tina appears.
"Matthew, lower your voice. You're going to wake up the girls." She says in a hushed voice.
Kelly woke up first, hearing Matthew burst loudly into the house.
Even at 6 years old, she knows her dad isn't right.
She climbs out of her bed over to her little sister's and climbs in knowing that Beyoncé will be scared when she wakes up.
"I don't give a damn. Where's my dinner?" He asks looking at her expectantly.
She walks over to the fridge and pulls out his plate.
"Why ain't this shit hot?" He barks angrily.
"Because I made it hours ago. I kept it warm as long as I could." She sighs pulling the foil off of the plate and turning on the stove to re-warm the plate.
It's nearly 2am and he got off work at 5:30pm.
How was she supposed to keep the plate warm for 8 hours?
In the girls' room, 3 year old Beyoncé wakes to the sound of a loud slap and her mother screaming.
"Mommy?" She calls out loudly.
"Y'all stay in the room." Tina instructs.
Beyoncé clings onto her sister tightly as the sounds of her father beating her mother echo through the small house.
After a while, they hear the front door slam and Tina comes into their room bloody and disheveled.
"Kelly, bring me your suitcases from the closet." She says hurriedly going to their dressers and grabbing clothes.
Kelly nods and does what she's told.
This is not their first time going through this routine.
--3 Years Later--
"What happened?" Tina asks seeing the bruises and welts on her daughters.
She already knows what happened but she needs the confirmation before she makes any sudden moves.
"Daddy got mad at me." Beyoncé cries.
Tina takes a deep breath pulling Beyoncé closer to her.
She can't loose her mind in front of the kids.
They've gone through enough.
The judge granted joint custody to Matthew during the divorce much to the dismay of Tina and her new husband Richard.
Usually, Matthew misses his weekends but he picked the girls up Friday night and he just dropped them off a few minutes ago bruised and scared.
"Kelly, I need you to tell me exactly what happened." Tina says to her eldest.
Kelly explains how her father got upset with Beyoncé for talking about Uncle Johnny and how he went on a rant about how awful gay people are before eventually hitting them.
Kelly seems to have endured the majority of the physical abuse, but Beyoncé appears to be the one who is most emotionally impacted.
"I'm calling the lawyer first thing in the morning. Then the police." Richard tells his wife when they send the girls to clean up for dinner.
If it were up to him, he'd go to that man's house and fuck him up but he's not trying to go to Jail and leave Tina alone with their 4 girls.
Upstairs, Bia holds Beyoncé as they sit on the edge of her bed listening to Kelly rant.
"When I get big, I'm going to beat him up." The angry 9 year old says punching a pillow.
"My daddy's going to make sure he goes to jail." Bia says confidently.
"Then I'll beat him up when he gets out." Kelly says. "I'm gone hit him with my car."
"You're not hitting anyone with your car." Tina says standing in the doorway with baby Solange in her arms.
She wants to do it herself.
--The next morning--
Kelly holds Tina's hand and Richard carries Beyoncé as they walk into the police station.
They sit down with an officer and tell her what happened before a CPS investigator takes the girls into a separate room.
She asks them a lot of questions about their parents and step father.
Too many questions if you ask Kelly.
She just wants to go home.
Beyoncé barely speaks.
She just answers questions by shaking her head yes or no.
Eventually, a child psychologist comes in to speak to them.
After 3 hours, the psychologist recommends a therapist for them, CPS clears them to go home with Tina and Richard, and the police send out officers to locate and arrest Matthew.
When they locate him, he's arrested for child abuse and possession of a controlled substance for having 11 grams of cocaine on him at the time of the arrest.
Short chapter but I thought it was crucial to Beyoncé's character.
