Spring was at its peak, with the warm rays of the sun shining through the dome that loomed over the academy students. Everyone was gathered for an announcement from the Triad and the professors. The place felt more crowded than usual, as even the third years were present, expecting something they had already anticipated.

On the other hand, some students remarked that lately Hemlock had been spending a lot of time entering classrooms across all the years, interacting with the students in her own way, even joking with a few. On one occasion, she forced a student to share their chips with the rest of the class and with her. It was quite a peculiar lesson.

For the main group of girls, curiosity was gnawing at them. Then, beside Professor Salthyer, the Triad appeared instantly. As the room fell silent, Foxglove stepped forward to speak.

«Warm greetings to all of you, our dear students. We are very pleased to see and observe how all of you have improved in every area. Some of you seemed ready to give up, or wanted to, but you didn't. Each of you had your reasons, and they are bearing fruit.» At these words, the first-years felt proud, and even the third-years looked hopefully at the younger students.

«But, as your superiors know, the time is nearer than ever for a tradition every first-year class has had: a small tournament to assess your current skills. A tournament among you, the first-years. We'll see who the best of the first year is.»

Everyone in the hall began talking; the girls were excited. Snap was completely happy. She had been practicing with Salthyer for a few days since her recovery and could feel real improvement. She even asked Salthyer to stay for an extra half-hour of practice every day. But suddenly, she felt a shove on her shoulder. She turned quickly, slightly annoyed, only to see Calamagrostis walking away, but turning just enough to say something to Snap.

«Listen up, freak. I don't expect anything from you, but I swear if we meet in the tournament... we'll settle this once and for all. And I won't go easy on you, little mermaid.» He kept walking. Snap just frowned before smiling, confident she could show Cal what she was made of.

Foxglove continued speaking. «Now, I want you to know that not only will all the students be watching the tournament, but also your parents and the city where the tournament will be held... the city of Burniston.» After saying this, the smallest of the three spoke up.

«Originally, we planned to hold the tournament in Slab, but an infestation ruined those plans. So the Crown Country offered us the coliseum in Burniston, near the border with the bridge to Witch Country.»

Salthyer shuddered at the mention of the Crown's involvement. He remembered Cornnic's words. But he wasn't the only one who felt a cold chill down his spine; the atmosphere turned uneasy.

Everyone was aware that the previous incident involving the fire at the academy was linked to an attack by someone from the Witch Country. Although the Crown Country supposedly took care of the problem and reaffirmed their treaty, information was scarce—almost more like a rumor. Even Salt didn't know much about it anymore; he wasn't filing his reports as frequently as before. Everything had turned into a web of deceit.
