After leaving the tent, I carefully stepped into the cool night air, the campfire's glow slowly fading behind me. The ground was a little uneven, but I managed to navigate it quietly, my heart thudding in my chest. The crisp breeze tickled my face, carrying the faint smell of charred wood and pine.
As I got closer to the edge of the camp, I spotted Patrick leaning casually against a tree, his silhouette lit up by the soft, silvery moonlight. He looked up when he heard me approach, a playful smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Hey," he said, his voice low and warm like he'd been waiting just for me.
"Hey," I replied, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement buzz through me.
"You actually came," he teased, crossing his arms. "I thought you might ghost me."
"Me? Ghost you? Never," I shot back, grinning as I took a step closer.
"Well, now that you're here," he said, his smile turning into something a little mischievous, "you up for a little adventure?"
I raised an eyebrow, pretending to think about it. "Depends. Is it something that's gonna get me in trouble?"
"Maybe," he said with a wink, pushing off the tree. "But I promise it's worth it."
"Alright, lead the way," I said, my grin matching his as he gestured for me to follow.
We moved quietly, the camp fading into the background as the forest came alive around us. The sounds of crickets chirping and leaves rustling in the breeze filled the air, and I couldn't help but feel a rush of adrenaline as I followed him.
"Okay, wait," he said suddenly, turning to face me. His expression had shifted slightly, his tone more serious now. "Before we go any further, I need you to trust me."
I tilted my head, curious. "What's that supposed to mean?"
He pulled something from his pocket—a soft, dark fabric. "I wanna blindfold you."
I blinked, caught off guard. "Uh, what?"
"Relax," he laughed, holding up his hands like he was trying to calm me down. "It's nothing sketchy, I swear. Just trust me, alright? I wanna surprise you."
I hesitated for a second, but something about the way he looked at me—like he was so sure I'd say yes—made it impossible to say no. "Fine," I said, rolling my eyes playfully. "But if you lead me into a tree, I'm never forgiving you."
"No trees, I promise," he said, stepping closer.
He tied the blindfold gently over my eyes, his fingers brushing against my skin. I felt my breath hitch at the closeness, my heart doing this weird little flip.
"Okay, hold my hand," he said softly, and I reached out, feeling his warm fingers wrap around mine.
"Alright, lead the way, mysterious guide," I teased, even though my stomach was doing somersaults.
We walked slowly, and without my sight, everything felt sharper. I could hear the crunch of leaves underfoot, the distant sound of an owl hooting, and even the soft rhythm of Patrick's breathing. His hand was steady, and I found myself relaxing a little as we moved deeper into the woods.
"We're almost there," he murmured, his voice close to my ear.
After a few more steps, he stopped. "Okay, ready?"
"Born ready," I replied, my voice full of fake confidence.
He chuckled. "Alright, here goes."
Patrick untied the blindfold, and as my eyes adjusted, I felt my jaw drop.
As my eyes adjusted to the scene in front of me, my breath hitched. The forest had opened up into a small clearing, and it was absolutely magical. Fireflies floated all around, their tiny golden lights blinking like stars, lighting up the space in a soft, dreamy glow. The trees seemed to frame the clearing perfectly, their branches swaying gently in the breeze.
"Whoa," I whispered, completely mesmerized. "Patrick, this is... this is insane."
"I knew you'd like it," he said, his voice soft but full of pride.
"Like it? Are you kidding? It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," I said, spinning slowly to take it all in.
I glanced back at him, and he was watching me, his hands in his pockets and a small smile on his face. His expression was different—calmer, softer. It made my heart do this weird fluttery thing again.
"You're not just showing this to everyone, are you?" I teased, trying to lighten the mood.
He laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, this spot's special. Only a few people know about it."
"And you brought me here?"
"Yeah," he said, stepping a little closer. "I wanted to share it with you."
My cheeks burned, and I looked away, pretending to focus on the fireflies again. The air between us felt charged, like something unspoken was hanging there, waiting.
He cleared his throat. "You know, Kat... you're not like anyone I've ever met."
I froze for a second, my heart pounding so hard I was sure he could hear it. "What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, my voice quieter now.
"It means..." He paused, running a hand through his hair. "It means I think you're amazing. And I don't think I've been able to stop thinking about you since—well, since forever."
My breath caught in my throat, and I turned to face him fully. His eyes searched mine like he was trying to figure out if he'd just made a mistake.
"Patrick," I started, but before I could say anything else, he took a small step forward, closing the distance between us.
"I'm probably gonna regret this if I'm wrong, but..." he whispered, leaning in.
"You're not wrong," I said softly, my voice barely audible over the sound of my heartbeat.
That was all it took. He closed the space between us, his hand gently cupping my cheek as his lips brushed against mine.
It was just him and me, standing in this perfect, magical clearing, wrapped up in the kind of moment you never want to end. His other hand slid to my waist, pulling me just a little closer, and I felt my fingers instinctively curl into his shirt.
When we finally pulled back, both of us were a little breathless. He rested his forehead against mine, his eyes still closed, a small, lopsided smile tugging at his lips.
"Well," he said, his voice low and a little raspy, "that wasn't exactly how I planned this night to go."
"Not complaining," I replied, laughing softly, my cheeks still burning.
He chuckled, his thumb brushing against my cheek. "Me neither."
For a moment, we just stood there, caught in the stillness of the night, with the fireflies dancing around us like they were celebrating too.
