Suspended Connection

The next few days felt like an eternity without Patrick in class. The hallways seemed emptier, and even the chatter of friends felt muted without his presence. I missed the way he'd lean in to whisper something funny during lectures or how we'd share a knowing glance when the teacher would drone on about something irrelevant.

The news of his suspension hung heavy in the air, and though I tried to focus on my studies, my mind was often distracted. The chaos of the cafeteria fight replayed in my head, the adrenaline of the moment still fresh. I felt guilty for what had happened, especially since Patrick was facing the consequences for standing up for me. He had a good heart, and I admired that about him, but I hated that it led to him being suspended.

Each day felt longer than the last, and every time I walked past our usual meeting spot, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. Adri noticed my distraction and tried to cheer me up, but even her usual enthusiasm couldn't completely lift my spirits.

"Hey, how about we go grab coffee after class? You need a break," she suggested one afternoon, nudging me as we headed to our last lecture of the day.

"Sure, that sounds great," I replied, forcing a smile.

As we walked into the classroom, I noticed a few people glancing my way, whispering and pointing. It seemed like everyone was still buzzing about the fight. I sat down and tried to concentrate, but all I could think about was Patrick. I hoped he was doing okay and that he wouldn't be too bored during his suspension.

After class, Adri and I headed to our favorite café. As we approached, I caught sight of someone leaning against the wall outside. My heart skipped a beat when I realized it was Patrick. He looked relaxed, his usual easy smile lighting up his face as he saw me.

"Kat!" he called, waving me over.

I rushed to him, my heart racing with excitement. "What are you doing here?" I asked, breathless.

"I just wanted to see you," he replied, his gaze soft and sincere. "I didn't want to stay cooped up at home any longer. It was driving me crazy."

"I missed you," I admitted, feeling my cheeks warm. "The uni feels so different without you."

"I know what you mean. It's been boring as hell. I'd rather be here with you than stuck at home," he said, stepping closer.

Adri gave us a knowing look before heading inside the café. I could feel the tension between Patrick and me, the space between us charged with unspoken words.

"Are you okay?" I asked, concern lacing my voice.

He ran a hand through his hair, a slightly sheepish grin spreading across his face. "I'm fine. Just a little annoyed about the suspension. I feel like I let you down."

"You didn't let me down! You stood up for me, and I appreciate that more than anything. You did the right thing," I reassured him, my heart swelling with admiration.

"Still, it shouldn't have ended like this," he said, glancing away for a moment before meeting my gaze again. "I wish I could've defended you without facing punishment."

I took a step closer, wanting to bridge the distance. "We'll figure this out together. You won't be suspended forever, and once you're back, we can get back to normal."

Patrick smiled softly, the warmth in his eyes making my heart flutter. "Yeah, you're right. I just didn't expect things to spiral so out of control."

We stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the world around us fading away. I felt a surge of gratitude for this moment, for the way he was looking at me like I was the only person in the world that mattered.

Adri poked her head out of the café, a teasing grin on her face. "Are you two going to stand out there all day, or are you coming in?"

I laughed, breaking the spell between Patrick and me. "We're coming!" I called back, and we walked inside together, the atmosphere lightening instantly.

As we settled at a table, I felt the conversation flow easily between us again, just like it used to. We discussed everything from our classes to silly anecdotes about our favorite teachers. Patrick's laughter was infectious, and I felt my worries about school and his suspension begin to melt away.

"So, what have you been up to while being suspended? Anything exciting?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I binged a lot of shows and tried to catch up on some reading, but it wasn't the same without you," he admitted, and I felt a warm glow at his words.

"Aw, I missed you too," I said, a playful smile spreading across my face. "You know, you could have called me."

He chuckled a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Yeah, but I thought I'd surprise you instead. Besides, I wanted to see that look on your face when I showed up."

"You definitely succeeded," I replied, leaning in a bit closer. "It was a nice surprise."

As we sipped our drinks, the conversation drifted to lighter topics, and I found myself getting lost in the rhythm of our banter. It felt so good to be in his presence again, laughing and joking as if nothing had changed. But there was an underlying tension, a current that surged between us, reminding me of that kiss in the forest.

Adri returned to the table, a smile on her face as she interrupted our moment. "So, what did I miss?"

"Just a lot of flirting," Patrick said, his eyes glinting with amusement.

"Flirting? You two are practically glowing!" Adri teased, and I could feel my cheeks flush at her words.

"Okay, okay, maybe a little," I admitted, unable to suppress a grin.

"Good! You two should definitely keep it up," she said, winking at us.

"Don't worry, we will," Patrick replied, his gaze steady on mine, and I felt my heart race.

After finishing our drinks, we headed back outside, the sun shining brightly above. The afternoon air was warm, and I felt lighter as we walked together. The school building loomed in the distance, but for now, it didn't seem so daunting.

As we approached the entrance, Patrick leaned closer to me, his voice low. "I'll be back to class soon, I promise. I can't let Bradwin get away with acting like that."

I nodded, feeling a surge of confidence from his words. "And I'll be right there beside you, cheering you on."

"Good, because I might need a little support to deal with him," he chuckled, but his tone shifted slightly. "And Kat?"

"Yeah?" I looked up at him, curiosity filling me.

"Thanks for always being in my corner. It means more than you know," he said, sincerity etched in his expression.

In that moment, I knew we were forging a deeper connection, one that was built on trust and understanding. "I'll always be in your corner, Patrick," I replied, my heart swelling with warmth.

As we reached the entrance, I turned to him, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension about the challenges ahead. "Let's make a plan for when you get back. We'll celebrate your return, okay?"

"Definitely. I can't wait," he said, his smile lighting up his face.

With a final shared glance, we parted ways, my heart racing as I walked away. I knew there would be more challenges ahead, but I felt confident that together, we could face anything. Patrick was worth it, and I was excited about the journey ahead.
