Bound by Accusation

The next morning, I woke up to frantic pounding on the door. The sound shattered my half-asleep state, and a wave of dread crashed over me. My heart was racing before I even had the chance to fully process what was happening. I barely blinked before the door swung open, and my mom barged in, her face pale, her hands shaking.

"Katherine," she choked out, voice trembling with fear. "There are police officers here."

The words hit me like a slap. Police? My stomach twisted into a tight knot as I scrambled to throw on something—anything—and stumbled down the stairs. My parents were already down there, their voices a mix of confusion and panic. My heart was pounding in my chest, every beat making me feel like I was going to pass out.

In the living room, two uniformed officers stood with grim expressions. One of them stepped forward, his eyes locking with mine. His face was impassive, but his voice was as sharp as a blade. "Are you Katherine Carter?"

I barely nodded, my throat dry. "Yes," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

"We're here to arrest you in connection with the incident involving Olivia Parker," the officer said, and my world tilted on its axis.

What?

My knees gave way, and I grabbed the back of the nearest chair, desperately trying to steady myself. This couldn't be happening. Not to me.

"What the hell?!" My dad roared, his fists clenched at his sides. "This is a joke, right? My daughter would never hurt anyone!"

My mom's voice cracked, full of panic. "This has to be some kind of mistake!"

But the officers didn't flinch. One of them took a step forward, pulling out a set of handcuffs, and that was it. My whole body froze as the cold metal circled my wrists. I could hear my parents protesting, their voices lost in the haze of panic that was clouding my mind. Everything felt unreal. Like I was trapped in a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.

The ride to the police station was a blur. I couldn't focus on anything except the fact that my life was falling apart, piece by piece. My parents followed in the car behind us, their worried faces barely comforting me. When we pulled up to the station, the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. Olivia's parents were already there. Mr. Parker's face was twisted in anger, and Mrs. Parker looked like she might cry at any moment.

"You pushed her off the roof!" Mr. Parker thundered, his voice dripping with rage. "You tried to kill our daughter!"

The words hit me like a freight train, and I felt the color drain from my face. I couldn't speak. I couldn't breathe.

"I didn't—" I stammered, trying to explain, but Mrs. Parker cut me off with a wail that made my chest tighten.

"You were there! We know it was you! Why, Katherine? Why would you do this to our Olivia?" She sounded like she was dying inside, her grief flooding the room.

Tears blurred my vision, but no words came. My parents jumped in immediately, their voices rising in my defense.

"How dare you accuse my daughter of this?" my dad shouted, his face red with anger. "Katherine would never—"

"My daughter is in the hospital because of her!" Mr. Parker snapped, his eyes burning with fury. "How can you sit there and defend her?!"

The tension in the room was unbearable. I couldn't even look at anyone. My body was trembling. And then, just when I thought it couldn't get worse, Patrick walked in.

His face was pale, his exhaustion written all over him. For a split second, I thought maybe he'd defend me, maybe he'd step in and say something to set things straight. But as his eyes met mine, I saw the hesitation. The doubt. He looked at me, then back at his parents, and for the first time, I saw how lost he was too.

Patrick raised his hands in the air, his voice cutting through the noise. "Stop, all of you!" he shouted.

His parents looked at him like he was out of his mind. His mom's expression was hard as stone. "And this is the girl you've been defending? A girl who pushes people off rooftops?"

Patrick flinched, and my heart broke at the sound of his voice cracking. "Mom, it's not what it looks like," he said, his tone desperate.

"You think this is the kind of girl you should be with?" Mr. Parker sneered, pointing at me with venom in his eyes. "She's trouble. This is what you've brought upon us!"

"Don't you dare talk about my daughter like that!" my dad yelled, stepping toward him, his fists clenched. "Your son isn't perfect either!"

The shouting escalated. I couldn't even hear my thoughts over the chaos. My heart was racing, my hands shaking, but I stayed silent. Patrick didn't say anything back. He didn't defend me. And in that silence, the truth hit harder than anything anyone could say.

Tears spilled over, and that's when my mom's words landed like a bomb. "Katherine, you're not seeing him anymore."

The room went silent, as if the air had been sucked out. I couldn't breathe.

"What?" I whispered, the word barely escaping my lips.

"You heard me," she said, voice firm, almost cold. "This relationship is over. Look at the mess it's caused. Look at what it's doing to you. He doesn't even stand by you."

Patrick's head jerked up. His eyes were wide, stricken. "Mrs. Carter, please—" he started, but my dad cut him off.

"She's right. This is over, Patrick. Stay away from my daughter."

I watched him—watched as his face twisted in pain, but he didn't argue. His silence was a punch to the gut. I wanted to scream, to explain, to do anything to make him believe me, but the words were stuck. I couldn't fight this. Not now.

Before I could process anything else, the door to the station opened, and Adri rushed in, followed by my friends. Her usual fiery energy was replaced with a seething determination. She was pissed.

"What's going on here?" she demanded, her voice sharp as she scanned the room.

Before anyone could answer, Mrs. Parker turned on her, venom dripping from her words. "Are you her accomplice? Were you part of this?"

Adri straightened, eyes blazing with fire. "Don't talk to me like that, Mrs. Parker," she snapped. "Katherine is my friend, and I'm not gonna stand by and let you throw these baseless accusations at her!"

"You'll regret this," Mrs. Parker spat, but Adri didn't flinch.

"No," Adri said, her voice low and dangerous. "You will regret underestimating her and treating her like this."

Her words hit like a punch, and for the first time that day, I felt a tiny flicker of relief. Someone had my back. But the police quickly stepped in, ordering everyone to calm down.

I sank into a chair, everything swirling around me. My parents were still arguing with Patrick. Adri stood tall, defending me like the badass she was. Patrick stood there, silent, his eyes locked on the floor.

And in that moment, I realized how utterly alone I felt. The weight of betrayal, the crushing uncertainty, and the suffocating feeling of being misunderstood were unbearable. There was no way out. All I could do was hold on.
