Why is it so fucking cold here??" Jane said as she shivered her way towards Care of Magical Beasts.
"Well it is Winter, I don't know what you expected-" Poppy said, giggling at her misery "You're not really dressed well though, where is your scarf?"
"Lost it-" Jane said quietly, not wanting to mention to her friend where it actually was. They continued forward, the both of them taking turns to slip on the snow as they went down.
It was the middle of December now, and the grounds were almost always peppered with new snow. It was absolutely beautiful to look at- but quite treacherous to walk through. Just last week when they had been taking this same route to Beasts class with Leander he had slipped and ended up sliding almost the entire way towards their class.
Besides the cold aside, Jane didn't really mind the winter. It was kind of unreal to watch the season change here. Not too long ago it had been Fall, the leaves changing into a beautiful autumn array around the valley. Then she woke up one morning to see the first snow which had been its own kind of magical experience.
It had been about two months since everything had gone down that fateful weekend. Lots of things had happened since then, and yet Jane didn't really feel much different. The biggest thing that had happened was the completion of the second trial, which compared to the first was even more anti-climactic.
Jane had always thought that Rookwood's trial was basically just Rackham's in another font. Basically the same puzzles, same fights, and only a different memory at the end. The only good thing that came from it was the fact that she wasn't a total zombie by the end. She was able to, mostly, function until she made it to her bed. Of course, she had her redheaded knight waiting for her nonetheless.
Garreth Weasley- that had been another change since that night months ago. They had started dating officially, and it still made her stomach fill with butterflies when she thought about it. Other than the title change in their relationship the only big difference was the time they spent together. She already had spent a considerable time with the Gryffindor boy, but now she was rarely away from him. Being to a non shared class, sneaking away to work in the room of requirements, or sleeping, were about the only time she was ever without him (and sometimes sleeping wasn't even spent apart).
He was a wonderful boyfriend, and a great distraction for the emptiness she sometimes felt herself getting sunk into. It's not that her life wasn't great, actually it seemed quite perfect during this limbo between trials. But oftentimes it felt like there were things missing... unfortunately she knew exactly what those things were and they both wore green.
Jane had still not spoken to Sebastian during all this time. She would see him in class, or out in the halls and at meals, but they never talked. She wasn't even sure that he ever looked at her anymore; he was so totally aloof. His absence had become less painful as time went on, but the emptiness never went away.
She still saw Ominis the same ways she saw the other boy, but thankfully he didn't avoid her. They talked if they were ever together in the halls, and they still studied charms every Friday afternoon. But with all the work that they were getting as their OWLs drew closer though the opportunities to see him became less and less.
