At the moment, Matthew was leaning heavily against a wall, trying to catch his breath. Nico, on the other hand, looked mostly unbothered. Sure, she might've been breathing a bit hard, but she was in a much better condition than Matt.

She let him rest for a few seconds, before saying, "you... really didn't have to intervene back there..."

Matthew just gave her a very unamused look, replying in a dry tone, "you're so very welcome. And I'm alright, thank you for asking."

Nico's expression soured for a moment, before she realized Matt actually had a point there. She let out a small, but entirely audible sigh, as she leaned back against a wall, before replying, "alright, alright...I won't deny, you did me a pretty big favor back there, and I am grateful, it's just... From what I know about you humans, you don't typically just go around saving anyone and everyone in danger...least of all us..."

She said that last line much more quietly, to the point where it was just barely audible.

Matt had recovered enough to the point where he could stand up straight again, and thought about Nico's words for a moment, before letting out a long, irritated sigh.

"Well," he said, "it's not really something I can explain, nor is it something I care about enough to try and explain. But if I had to answer? It takes all kinds to make a world, but people like me aren't exactly a dime a dozen anymore."

"...So you're just crazy, then?" Nico replied. She let out an amused huff, before following up with, "whatever, but who are you really? If you're supposed to be some sort of 'diamond in the rough' among the rest of humanity, then I should at least ask who you are and how you got down here."

Matthew let out a sigh, taking a good long look at his right arm, before replying, "My name? That'd be Matthew. You can call me Matt if you want to, I guess... As for how I got here? I dunno. All I really remember is blacking out after that surgery, and waking up down here. They didn't tell me anything about this place at all."

Hm...of course he knew nothing of this place beforehand. These humans never do. But...surgery? He must be talking about that metal arm of his. But...what could the humans possibly hope to achieve by sending him down here alone?

Now, it was Matt's turn to ask questions. "Now, I got 2 big things to ask you right now. First of all, what goes on down in this facility? Second of all, are there any other humans down here besides me?" He asked.

Nico quickly snapped back to reality, replying, "well...awhile ago, there used to be many more humans down here. Those humans...experimented on us gootraxians in all sorts of ways. Some weren't so bad, but others were...a bit much."

Nico looked troubled for a brief moment, before quickly shrugging it off and continuing. "Anyways, there was a massive...'containment breach', I think it was called. The lights went out for the first time back then, and we gootraxians all escaped our cells.
After that, the humans fled back to the surface, with the exception of small groups of humans popping up every now and then. These humans typically just grab whatever they can get ahold of and start attacking gootraxians indiscriminately."

Matthew took quite some time to take this all in. After about 7-ish seconds, he said, "if that's the case...then why didn't you attack me when you had the chance?"

Nico looked away for a moment, before replying, "well, I had bigger problems at the moment...and you didn't strike me as particularly threatening."

Matt looked a bit miffed at first, but quickly shrugged it off, before following up with, "alright...are you the only gootrax down here that won't try to...do whatever to me? And how do you know so much, anyways?"

Nico simply replied, "I was a part of the breach. I've seen pretty much everything that went on since then. And no, there are actually quite a few gootraxians down here that tolerate humans, granted said humans don't do anything to provoke them. Some of them might even be willing to make friends with you, if you're actually nice to them."

Matt nodded briefly, before replying, "and the other humans? C'mon, they can't all be aggressive towards you guys, right?"

Expecting this question, Nico just shrugged, saying, "maybe. But if they're down here, then I haven't met them yet."

MATT'S INTERNAL MONOLOGUE

Augh...well...damn.

Could be worse, I guess. S'not like I'm the only human stuck down here. At least I now have a vague idea of where "here" even is.

But...is Laminax seriously behind all this? How the hell have they been able to keep all this from the public? Does the government even know about this place???

And Nico said something about small groups of humans just "popping up" around the facility? There's no way they could've just stumbled down here.

...

Wait...if Laminax is really behind this entire facility, then...have they been sending these people down here? Is this entire facility just...one giant social experiment now?!

Matt was already beginning to look seriously disturbed, even though he still had yet to fully grasp the gravity of the situation he was currently in.

He leaned back against a wall, trying to keep his breathing steady as his heart threatened to beat out of his chest.

Meanwhile, Nico was standing back somewhat, unsure what she should do. Eventually, she decided to try and help him calm down, putting a big fluffy paw on his shoulder.
"Hey, take it easy, Matthew," she said. "It...it could be a lot worse for you. Just don't lose your head, and you'll be fine."

"...Easy for you to say," he replied. "You've had all th' time in th' world to get used to this joint..."

However, he was actually beginning to calm down. His pulse became less intense, and he no longer struggled to keep his breathing steady, as he slowly pushed himself off of the wall, and rested his left hand on top of Nico's head, saying, "but...I do appreciate the effort. Thanks, Nico."

She reflexively flinched away from his touch, but eased up fairly quickly, even starting to lean into his palm slightly.

Matt just had the biggest smile on his face at this, as he began to gently pat Nico on the head.

Well...this place is still crazy as hell, but maybe things won't be as bad as I thought...

Ah shit, now I've jinxed it.

Welp, whatever. After all, I still got my right arm back, and boy, does it get the job done.

Thing is though...feels like something's missing. Like a song without any actual beat to it.

Gah, wish I knew what was going on with this thing.
