CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE: Halloween

(Y/N) P.O.V)

I sat in front of the mirror, having only a few more strands to curl before I would be finished. There was only an hour left until John and I would have to be on the road, and I was starting to feel that pre-party excitement.

Jaren was hosting a Halloween party at his place, where he invited the boys over: Grizzy, Blarg, Puffer, and of course, John and I. I someone convinced John and Jaren to do a group costume, which turned out chaotic yet perfect.

Smii7y would be showing up as Kermit, because its iconic. He DIY'ed the whole costume, without asking for any help. He was sure that he could do it on his own, despite never learning how to sew. His costume was hands-down the most cursed costume I'd ever seen in my life, which made it so much better.

John would be Animal. Despite our best efforts to convince him to take a different route, like dressing as Miss Piggy for the sheer hilarity of it...he was adamant. He insisted that he needed to be Animal so he could look hot and stylish but still fit the character. I have yet to see his costume. He was also creating it from scratch, but i had more faith in him then Jaren, even if he only started yesterday.

And me? I was going as Fozzie Bear.

I curled the last strand of my hair, giving it a quick fluff before setting the hat on my head, complete with bear ears I had glued on. I tilted my head, admiring my costume in the mirror, I had a brown fluffy dress with matching leg warmers. It was goofy, yes, but it was Halloween, and that's exactly what i was going for.

"(Y/N)? You done yet?" John says, knocking before walking in. He wore a vibrant, shaggy orange and brown faux fur jacket that looked like it had been stitched together from the wildest scraps of fabric one could find. He also wore baggy ripped jeans, with similar fabric scattered all over.

"Holy crap John, I can't believe you actually pulled that off, Its literally perfect!"

"What do you mean, 'actually pulled that off'? I look fucking good." He says, crossing his arms.

"You started making your costume yesterday," I shot back, "I'm just surprised you managed to finish it at all and have it turn out this good in that amount of time. I mean, you literally call yourself the king of half-finished projects, so sorry for being surprised."

     "Fair enough."

We finished up preparing for the party and hopped in John's car. The ride was filled with iconic Halloween songs with not so iconic singing from either of us.

"Here we are," John says, smirking over at me.

A smile immediately grew on my face as we pull up and I see the Halloween decorations, which could only be described as delightfully chaotic. What once was multiple full plastic skeletons was now piles of bones, pulled apart and scattered across the lawn, with a cardboard sign in the middle of it all reading, 'whoops'

"This couldn't be more him if he tried." I say, still taking in the scene. There's something comforting about the effort, or lack thereof, that made everything feel so... Jaren. Yet despite the laughs, the nerves in my stomach lingered as we sat parked in the driveway. "I have no idea why I'm nervous, It's dumb," I say, rubbing my hands together, fidgeting in my seat.

John snorted, clearly relieved. "You finally realize it's dumb to be nervous around him. That's a start."

     I shot him a look. "Yes, I know it's dumb. Doesn't mean I can just...not be."
