the score starts out with wailing cries and echoes of sorrow, notes played in a frenzy as if the musicians are rushing to escape the discordance. the piercing shrill of the violin strings is sharp enough to kill and the harsh tones of the brasses clumsily drown out the rest of the orchestra.
the sounds are painful to all who hear it.
the cymbals are quick to counter the noise in a display of rhythmic retaliation, jolting the audience with every thunderous clap and demanding the attention of its listeners. yet the tumultuous tune eventually slows down to a mournful lament, choppy in the way several instruments begin to trail off...unable to keep up.
it's a fast-paced descent into grief.
the airy sounds of the woodwinds, however, offer respite- soft reminders to keep on playing even if all you can manage is a hushed melody. the flutes and clarinets weave a lyrical balm to one's soul, as if daylight has timidly broken through the dark clouds to offer its warmth. with that, the music rapidly begins to pick up as it transforms into a harmony so beautiful in its strength and power.
one can hardly remember the cacophony from earlier.
all too soon, the orchestra plays the last strains of the finale- dulcet chimes of relief mixed in with mellifluous victory- and the audience wastes no time leaping to their feet in celebration. the persistence of this piece has garnered tears and applause from every corner of the room. it's a ballad of hope and happiness that followed through until the very end.
➙ when the music fades, peace will finally be restored
