When he called, I understood where this was going, but I wanted to stop it. I knew our relationship wasn’t like others—we were never going to have a happy ending. And I had started to like him, which was exactly what I didn’t want. My main goal was just to find my sister, save him, and find the person responsible for all this.

Believe me, when I said those words to him, I saw the pain in his eyes. My own heart felt like it was being torn apart, but this was just the beginning, and there were many months ahead where I would need to keep my distance.

I woke up, determined not to ignore him. As I was putting on my watch, my phone started ringing. When I saw the caller ID, a smile crept onto my face. At the same time, I noticed him glancing at my phone, his jaw clenching. I ignored his reaction and took the call.

"Love ❤️" was written on the screen.

"Hello, baby," I said, cradling the phone between my shoulder and ear.

"Hello, Di! How are you? When are you coming here?" Winnie’s first question tumbled out.

"Hold on, baby. Soon, I promise. I miss you so much, but you know how work is." I glanced up to see him glaring at me through the mirror. As if on autopilot, I took a pinch of sindoor and applied it to my forehead.

"I’m going to kill my brother for giving you so much work," she said playfully, and I couldn’t help but notice the jealousy flicker in his eyes. I might have smirked a little before responding.

"No, jaan, you’re not going to do anything. After all, he’s your brother —my savior, too." His expression twisted in confusion, and I was quietly enjoying the turmoil on his face.

"Oh, my! This is the first time I’ve heard you taking his side," she teased.

"You don’t know how much your brother means to me," I said, applying my favorite lily perfume.

"Alright, I get it. You’re in a mood. Bye, Di!" I ended the call and turned to leave, but before I could take a step, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back.

"Ahh!" A gasp escaped my lips as I collided with his chest. His hand slipped around my waist, pulling me even closer. My breath was coming in quick, shallow bursts, our faces just inches apart.

"Wh...at a...re y...ou do...ing?" I stammered, my heart pounding.

"Who was on the phone?" he asked in a low whisper.

"None of your business. Let me go," I said, trying to wriggle free from his grip.

"Until we’re not divorced, everything related to you is my business," he growled, pulling me even closer. My chest pressed against his, and I could feel the tension between us thickening. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart, but just then, the door swung open.
