It was a normal day, I had picked up Sarah after school while Joel was at work.

I may not be Sarah's biological mother but I've been married to Joel for a 5 years and have been together for 10 so I've been in her life for such a long time and her mom isn't in the picture anymore so I have become her 'mother figure' and I'm so glad about that.

And no I will of course never replace her mom but she wasn't a good person.

She was an alcoholic and drug addict who mistreated Joel very badly and neglected Sarah from the time she was born until the time she was 2 years old and the only reason she stopped was because she left.

Me and Sarah had went home after we fixed Joel's watch for his birthday and waited for him to come home

"So how was school?" I ask her

"It was school," she said

I chuckled a little bit

"You know people suck and the work is hard"

"Yeah that's school for you, but don't worry things will get better" I say

"Doubted but ok" she says back and we both let out a small laugh

"I'm going to start on dinner, do you have any homework?"

"Yeah just some math"

"Ok well make sure you get that done"

"I willlllll"

Me and Sarah just got done eating dinner and we made a plate for Joel whenever he came home but he's out working super late tonight which sucks because he were going to celebrate his birthday today after he got off work but at this rate he won't even be home on his birthday

Me and Sarah are currently sitting on the couch watching TV. She's laying down with her head on my lap. Shes almost asleep

I'm starting to get extremely worried

Joel still isn't home and I have this extremely weird and bad feeling that u just can't shake off. And Joel still not being home Is making it a million times worse.

*click*

I look over and see the front door being unlocked and opened

It's Joel

Thank god

"Hey there's my two favorite girls" Joel says as he walks into the living room

He comes over and gives me a soft kiss on the lips

"Where have you been?" I ask him and Sarah starts stirring awake and her eyes flutter open and sees Joel

"I'm sorry baby I was caug-"

Sarah shoots up as it clicks in her mind that he's finally home

"DAD WHERE WERE YOU"

"I'm sorry I was caught up at work, the guys weren't there and just a bunch of other work stuff that I know isn't important to you kid and I'm sorry" Joel says with a sympathetic look on his face

"What time is it?!" Sarah asks

"It's late and way past time for you to go to bed. Why aren't you in," Joel gets cut off my Sarah looking at the clock and realizing it's still her dads birthday
