You wrap your arms around the girl as you sit up. "I'm sorry, Lily, that you have to live with a monster like me. I'm sorry. Maybe it would be better if you just stayed with them. Then I wouldn't hurt you." You slowly stand up, your arms limp. "Come on," you mutter, wrapping your hand around her small one and tugging her along. You make a motion for her to go back into the car. Her hair is dripping like she had just come out of the shower. At least she wasn't covered in mud.
As if finally snapping out of her fear, Lily reaches into the bag at her feet and pulls out a towel. She offers it to you.
You shake your head. "You use it, kid. I'll change at the airport. I'll turn up the heat so you stay warm." You shut her door and climb back into your seat. Your body doesn't seem to recognize that it is soaked to the bone.
The drive flashes by quickly. Lily stays quiet the entire time in the back of the car. The road turns to gravel as you make it to the outskirts of the small town. You speed up a bit, passing small houses that dot around the center of the town. The center was only composed of shops with a plaza in the center. With a population of about two hundred, everyone couldn't help but stick their necks into other people's business.
"We're here," you mumble as you come to a stop in front of the grocery store. You slide on your raincoat to hide the fact you were covered in mud. "Hop out, kid."
"Yessir," Lily says quickly. You realize how much you had scared her.
Crap, they were going to kill you.
You pick up your umbrella and head to the trunk to pull out your bag and suitcase. Lily follows faithfully behind as you pile her two bags on top of your own. You somehow manage to open the door, weaving through the store shelves before entering the back room. You make a motion for Lily to go up the narrow stairs first.
Taking them two at a time, you and Lily arrive at the large apartment located above the store. You were amazed you hadn't killed yourself coming up the stairs with three bags, a suitcase, and an umbrella.
Lily immediately runs into the living room on the left. You dump the bags onto the floor and shut the umbrella before following. A woman with strawberry blonde hair is lying on the couch, a hand resting on top of her watermelon sized belly.
"Lily!" Vivian cheers, stretching out her arms for a hug. You stare slightly at the woman as Lily rushes forward into Vivian's hug.
"Aren't you pregnant?" you mumble. Vivian turns away from Lily and somehow manages to grab your jacket and pull you into a bear hug.
"Oh my god, you're leaving us so soon again? You need a vacation Y/n."
Annoyance etches itself all over your face as you try to get the soon-to-be mother off of you before she realizes you're dripping water all over her floor. Wasn't she going to be delivering soon? Shouldn't that automatically disqualify her from crushing people in bear hugs?
You weren't really paying attention as Leon walks in. "Dude, Y/n, aren't you going to take your jacket off? You're dripping wet."
You ignore him, attention focused on Vivian. "Shouldn't people like you be resting?"
"Sure, sure, I can do whatever I want. Leon approves of it."
"That I doubt," you grumble, shooting a look at the beaming black haired male. "I need to go," you say as you manage to untangle yourself from Vivian. "Leon, catch."
You through your car keys at the man.
"Sweet." Leon lets out a low whistle. "I got a cool ride."
"Crash my car and your twins will never see their father," you threaten. His grin is still there.
"We know you just love us deep down!" Vivian yells, trying to hug you again. You stumble away from her.
"One of these days you will crush me."
"We really know you care about our well-being! That we matter to you deep down!" Vivian continued to talk in her singsong voice.
"Alice will be back soon," Leon says suddenly. "She wanted to stock up on more supplies just in case for the delivery." Leon takes a seat next to his wife on the sofa. Lily jumps onto his lap and beams.
You try to secretly leave the living room so you can go back down the stairs.
"It wasn't like I wanted to see her," you grumbled. "She can never get her nose out of my business."
"Well, she is curious. You know her sister went missing about six years back."
A grimace appears on your face as Vivian mentions that. "Yeah, I know. She should still butt out."
"Well, I'm glad she's here," Leon announces with a wink. He wraps his arms around Vivian's shoulders. "She took over the clinic, especially since the last guy who was there got shot." Leon gives you a wink as a scowl writes itself all over your face.
"I thought I told you it wasn't my fault!"
"Yeah, we know," they all say. Lily was just following along. She wasn't even there when it happened.
You grit your teeth. "Thanks a lot!"
Your phone beeps in your pocket. Your ride was here.
"Have to go?" Leon asks as you check your message. You nod your head.
"Bye," you say as you give them a wave before grabbing your bags.
"Be careful," Lily whispers.
"Don't worry kid. I'm sorry I scared you."
You turn as you begin to take the stairs, walking away quickly as Vivian lets out a scream.
"You weren't supposed to scare her, you idiot! Come back here, Y/n, and face my wrath!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I'm going to be suffering soon enough." No one could hear you but you say it all the same. Exiting the store, you smile at the sandy-haired man in the black car. The driver's window was rolled down and he had a scared look on his face.
"You're late. Kamiel's going to skin us alive."
"Chill out," you reply, setting your bags in the trunk before sliding into the passenger seat. "You're late too."
"Ugh. Y/n, just think about it. Kamiel could leave us in a room with the two brothers for a whole day and then we would have to talk to them!" He shivers as he turns the engine back on. You place your wet umbrella on the floor as you turn on the heater.
"It can't be that bad."
"Well not for you," Rye grumbles. "You're always just floating around not really giving a shit. Besides, you can hold your own in a meeting."
"It's going to be awkward," you mumble, not paying much attention to whatever Rye was rambling about.
You wondered what they would be like when you saw the two brothers again.
You also wondered if they could forgive you for what you've become.
Not only did you run away without a word, you went and became their enemy.
His enemy.
You couldn't keep the laughter inside you.
But that's life. Right?
