Days passed as Thomas convalesced in the hospital, his injury slowly healing with the help of dedicated medical staff. The doctors had been surprised by the extent of his concussion, but with rest and proper care, he was recovering well.
Eventually, his friends were allowed to visit him in his hospital room. Harry entered first, followed by William. Both looked relieved to see him awake and lucid.
Harry approached his bedside, a weary smile on his face. "Hey, Tom. Glad to see you're looking a bit better."
William looked him over, a mix of concern and annoyance in his eyes. "You scared the hell out of us, you know that?"
Harry nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you nearly gave us a heart attack. You shouldn't go running off alone to dangerous places, you know that by now."
William crossed his arms, looking at Thomas sternly. "Next time, use your common sense and call for backup, alright?"
"What... What happened to the Doc?" Thomas asked with a raspy voice
Harry and William exchanged a glance, obviously uncomfortable with the topic. It was Harry who spoke up first.
"He's been taken into police custody," he said delicately. "He's being investigated for his involvement in the drug smuggling operation and your attack."
The whole truth had come to light, the real reason why he did all those experiments on those patients. His wife died of an incurable genetic disease that was passed down to her by her own mother. Their daughter had inherited the diseases as well, but a more violent version and started showing symptoms much earlier during her childhood years.
Devastated, the father spend his days searching for a cure or a way to manage the symptoms. He started to focus less on his real work, spending more time in the laboratory than with his actual patients. He also started doing experiments on patients who were on their death bed, manipulating them into believing that he had a cure for their incurable disease, but it was actually the same disease his daughter had and then the 'cure' he made to see if it worked.
Eventually, the Hospital Staff and Medical Board of Directors had exposed him. He was due for a court trial but disappeared before it could be held. The daughter ended up succumbing to the disease, causing the doctor to completely lose it.
He started doing drugs, mostly hallucinogenics, until he realised he would go completely broke if he continued. So with his medical knowledge he made his own drug, Syflocyl. He started taking the drug, but in moderated dosages. Hitting Thomas over the head was one of his fits of rages.
He then started selling it to desperate people, which then spread through the underground and the Russians got a whiff of it. They then forced him to sell the goods to them for a cheaper price as the market. They then sold it to clubs as an 'experimental' drug, which is how the victims found it.
Lucas Anderson was treated in the hospital and is in rehab, getting himself clean. He swore to never do drugs again, fearing that the next day might be his last.
"And the Russians?" Thomas asked
William grimaced, running a hand through his hair. "They're still at large, but the police and FBI are working on it. They've got quite a bit of evidence against the Doc. Hopefully, that'll help nail those Russian bastards too."
The Russians had heard that their provider had been caught and started moving underground, afraid that The Doc might spill the beans, which he did. It also came out that Johnathan was in fact killed by one of the Russians, by the name of Boris, who had been trialled and send back to Russia. The tip off had come from Flint.
