Chapter 3 : A-Maze-ing Escape

As the hedgehogs progressed into the next room, small streaks of sunlight peered down onto them from small openings in the tall ceiling. This room was different from all the others given that it wasn't made of sandstone, it was circular, and most importantly, the hieroglyphs were in a different language than the previous rooms.

There were seven large pillar statues that stood around in a circle in the center of the room. Inside the circle of pillars was a platform protruding out of the floor with an inscription on it.

"This place is creepy." Sonic remarks as the two slowly creep into the room. The hedgehogs carefully watched their footing in case there were any traps, but there didn't appear to be any.

Sonic walked past the pillars and to the platform to look at the engravings, while Shadow placed a hand on one of the pillars in confusion.

"This doesn't make sense. This room is a dead end, so how the hell are we supposed to get out of here?" Shadow questions impatiently.

"Shadow, come look at this." Sonic ushers Shadow over to the platform. Shadow walks over and looks at the hieroglyphs Sonic was pointing out.

The writing wasn't in any language the two could read, but the pictures said enough. The image was of the seven chaos emeralds surrounding a larger emerald. The legend of the seven chaos emeralds was well known, but this suggestion of another emerald was peculiar.

"Is this like a prophecy or something, because this is too weird for me to figure out." Sonic says. Shadow remains silent as his eyes study the imagery. He was clearly lost in thought.

"Umm, hello? You still with me pal?" Sonic waves a hand in front of his darker counterpart. Shadow grabs Sonic's hand mid wave, his grip being a little rough. Sonic yelps in a mix of surprise and discomforting.

"Quit messing around." Shadow gives Sonic a stern stare and lets go of his rival's hand. "We have more pressing matters at the moment."

"Okay, okay, fine…" Sonic begrudgingly submits, flexing the fingers of his now released hand. "... I know you hate me and all, but you don't have to hate every single thing I do. Heck, I don't even know why you still hate me that much after all this time!"

Shadow opens his mouth to add on another one of his cold hearted remarks. But after Shadow fully digested what he said, no words came out. Shadow fell silent and gave Sonic a look that is very rarely seen on his stoic face. A look of surprise. It wasn't a very obvious surprise, but you could see it in his widened eyes.

Sonic was taken aback by Shadow's surprise and was now a little worried that he had offended his ebony rival. Sonic was curious as to why Shadow hated him, but he didn't really mean for his comment about it to be taken super seriously.

The hedgehogs stared at each other blankly as their minds both raced over the same question, why did they hate each other so much?

Shadow was about to open his mouth to say something, but was cut off by the sound of Sonic's wrist communicator going off. Sonic lifted his arm to look at the communicator screen, he was getting a call from Tails. Shadow rolled his eyes and quickly put back on his edgy facade.

"Tails! Man, am I glad to see you." Sonic answered the call with a sigh of relief. Tails was also relieved, but more worried about the immediate threat.

"Where the heck are you right now!? I've been trying to reach you for almost fifteen minutes! Eggman is launching an all out assault on the village and the gang is running low on steam!" Tails practically yelled in Sonic's face. Sonic could hear and see the destruction in the background of the call.

"Alright, tell the others to hold on a little longer. I'll be there soon." Sonic said reassuringly. Tails nodded with a small smile and hung up, not wanting to delay Sonic's arrival with any more small talk.

Shadow growled to himself, "I should have known that Eggman was behind our entrapment." He thought. " I swear, when I get my hands on that pathetic buffoon…"

"Shadow, I think I have an idea on how to get out of here, but you're going to have to trust me on this." Sonic quickly said. Shadow knew time was of the essence, so he decided to play along.

"Fine, what's your plan?" Shadow asked. Sonic crouched into a running stance and smirked.

"Follow my lead." Sonic said before running up and spin dashing onto the circular wall of the room. He remained curled up in his quills as he spun around the room on the wall, gaining momentum as he spun closer and closer towards the ceiling.

Shadow cursed at himself for not trying this earlier as he yet again followed Sonic's lead. They both climbed the wall this way, and once they got close enough to the ceiling, they launched off the wall and flew through one of the cracks in the ceiling.

The momentum they had gained sent them flying out of the mountain and falling back into the jungle. Still mid air, Sonic and Shadow untucked themselves from their quills and free falled back onto the jungle floor. Sonic rolled once he hit the ground while Shadow drifted to a stop thanks to his skates.

"Well, this has been a total nightmare. Love to spar some more but I've gotta split." Sonic hopped back to his feet, dusted himself off, and prepared to dash back to the village. Shadow walked up next to Sonic and readied to run towards the village as well. Sonic looked at him confused, to which Shadow greeted Sonic's confused look with an absolutely livid look.

"Don't think I'm going to let you get my share of ass kicking out of Eggman." Shadow said with so much menace in his voice that it wasn't even funny. Without wasting another beat, Shadow zoomed off into the jungle and towards the village.

"Whoookay then…" Sonic didn't dare say another word and dashed after his enraged rival, hoping he wouldn't have to save Eggman rather than fight him.
