"I don't get why the Professor won't let us go past the borders of the forest, it's like he's trying to hide something from us." Rainbow commented with some level of disappointment, having been tasked with repairing something in the forest. With Assistant Steve tagging along, unfortunately. "Perhaps Professor Favre has deemed us trustworthy to even be in the forest. Don't you think? Rainbow Assistant." Assistant Steve responded with a cheeky smile that looks so very wrong for someone like them.
Rainbow shudders, he severely hopes that the Professor finally upgrades Assistant Steve to a more humanoid looking appearance then the creepy robotic appearance he holds now. For a sentient Artificial intelligent, it was sorely needed if they really want to pass off as a living being.
Or get anywhere with civilization, if the Professor ever lets them visit one for that matter. Which he highly doubts would ever happen.
Nonetheless, they continue to make their way through the forest and towards their destination. Quite frankly, none of them knows why it was out in the forest like this, but they weren't complaining too much. It was a great excuse to at least leave the perimeter of the Lab, well, much further than what they're used to. Even back when Rainbow had escaped during his creation, he didn't really make it too far out.
Not like this, he highly suspected that this is a different path then the one he had used back then during the escape.
"Rainbow Assistant, you think too much." Rainbow glared at Assistant Steve who smiled in a mocking manner. The amount of time that Rainbow wanted to dismantle the android before them is too high to even count anymore. How long have they known each other? Who knows, it certainly will never erase the fact that it was his design that ended up with him having trauma of his creation.
Sadly, he had already attempted to kill them in their deactivation and it didn't work.
Nonetheless, they continued their trip towards their destination until at last, they did manage to arrive. Although, since they have no idea what to even expect here, they both remained cautious. Especially since they rather not go back to the lab in any sorts of injuries or trouble, otherwise Prof. Favre may not even trust them to handle being outside of the Lab anymore.
They were not going to ruin their rare chance of being out here after all.
Regardless, they made a disgruntled agreement between the two, Rainbow would handle doing the repairs while Assistant kept a watch out. They have no idea what to expect, but they doubt there's anything out here to harm them anyways. They never did see anything that would hurt them after all. Then again they have never really seen much of anything in the forest anyways.
Besides the occasional animals like Chickens, Cows, Rabbits, Pigs and maybe a sheep or even a random Alpaca! They still have several questions on where the Alpacas came from when they do see one.
Rainbow hums as he focuses on the task on hand, the sooner they both get this over with, the sooner they could explore with the remaining time they have left before they're due to return to the Lab. After all, Prof. Favre did say they both could explore as long as they get the task done and returned by sunset. Which wasn't a whole lot of time, per say, but it was better than nothing really.
Eventually, Rainbow smiled as he finished the repairs to the device. A strange and unusual lamp-like fountain shaped device that emits light at the center.
Weirdly enough, it does in fact act like an actual fountain, no doubt it's for the local animals.
"All finished, Rainbow Assistant?" Assistant Steve questioned, earning a sound of confirmation from Rainbow. "Yeah, it's all done now. Shall we go explore?" He answered with an exciting smile, Assistant Steve smiled as well and nodded. They both got their things and wandered off, exploring the forest and going closer to the borders for the first time since their existence in the Lab.
They saw all sorts of strange and unusual things, there were even the presence of creatures they have never seen before! Ranging from small rabbits with horns on their head to wolves with unique color coats and even as fascinating as seeing fairies. A rarity they never thought to see a glimpse of.
Of course, Assistant Steve made sure to take photos of every new creature they both saw or passed by. Until at last, they reached the border of the forest, where they were met with the open sky and a cliff.
Or what they had assumed to be a cliff when they both got closer, only to see that beyond it was nothing, but the never ending sky and the pitch dark nothing. Well, they both could faintly see an island in the distance housing some sort of structure, but they can't see anything else past that point.
Rainbow stares down at the emptiness, noting that it was The Void itself and–
"Rainbow Assistant, there's something inside of The Void." Rainbow nearly suffered whiplash when he turned to look at a haunted looking Assistant Steve who stared back at them. "There should be no way anything could survive in The Void itself–" Rainbow didn't get to finish their sentence when something flew past them. Engulfing them both in a shadow of darkness.
Jumping back and away from the edge, they scrambled to get closer to the safety of the Forest Border– that's when they looked up and saw something. Something extremely hard to understand, to even comprehend.
All they could make out was a millions of eyes trained on them both, massive yet somehow slender like a body– is it even a body at all? Does it even end? They can barely see it in its full height as the rest was hidden past the cliff. There were bones– Rainbow had to willed himself not to gag at the very sight of the creature.
The Eyes were one thing, but the rest of its appearance was a horrific eldritch nightmare.
The creature smiled– a horrific, trauma-inducing nightmare of a smile, as it made some sort of croon-like sound, patted them both on the head, then flew upward and down back into the Void.
It took exactly 10 whole minutes for it to fully do that action alone.
Rainbow and Assistant look at one another for a moment, then immediately book it back to the Lab. Once they returned, they immediately searched for Prof. Favre where they demanded to know what the heck was that creature and why it had lived in the Void. Unfortunately for them, Prof. Favre smiled like there wasn't anything wrong.
"Oh don't worry! That's just Kevin! He's an absolute sweetheart who does me a favor by keeping the Dimension Gate well guarded and ensuring the local creatures don't cause any problems. Even acting as my getaway to places I can't easily enter with the Gate!"
Rainbow Assistant and Assistant stared at their Professor like he had did the impossible or just did something that really defied the logic of literally existence itself.
Prof. Favre stares at them both in confusion.
"Would you rather deal with the creativity of writing a fanfiction or–"
Rainbow and Assistant immediately leave, going straight to the pantry. They rather clean the pantry and be traumatized by their meet up with 'Kevin' then deal with Fanfictions. They don't even know what it is and they rather not be associated with that.
*
Technically, them meeting a Eldritch horror wasn't necessary since meeting magical and all sorts of creatures living in the forest was enough, but alas.
I just had to include a Eldritch Horror as part of Prof. Favre craziness and it being relatively tame under his words is just adding onto the fact that he's insane.
