Nadia had been living with Isla and her twin brother Aiden for a few days now. The transition was smoother than she had expected, though she still hadn't had much interaction with Aiden. He kept to himself most of the time, a quiet presence in the house, only occasionally crossing paths in the kitchen or hallway. His tall, reserved figure intrigued her, but she felt no rush to push any boundaries just yet. After all, she had enough on her plate with work.
The end of her third week at the company had arrived, and just as Nadia was settling into the comfortable routine of her tasks, something unexpected happened at work. An email came through from Dan, her manager, just after lunch. The subject line read: Urgent: Client Project Crisis.
Her heart skipped a beat. Crisis? The project she was assigned to had been progressing well—at least, that's what she thought.
Nadia quickly clicked open the email. The key member of their project team, who had been overseeing the client's account, had suddenly left due to a personal emergency. Without them, a critical piece of the project was hanging in the balance, and the team was scrambling to fill the gap.
Dan's message was clear. Nadia, I need you to step in and handle client communication and deliverables for the next few days. I know it's a lot, but I trust you can do it. Let's talk ASAP.
She stared at the screen, feeling a knot form in her stomach. Client communication? That had never been her role. She'd been involved with the research and data preparation, but managing the client directly? It was a whole new level of responsibility. Could she really handle this?
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, but before she could type a response, her phone rang.
"Nadia, it's Dan," his voice came through briskly. "I'm sorry to throw this at you last minute, but we need someone who knows the project well, and you're the best fit."
"I understand," Nadia replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'll do my best."
Dan gave her a quick rundown of the situation: the client needed updates on deliverables, progress reports, and a timeline for the next phase of development. Nadia had just a few hours to prepare for the meeting that afternoon.
As soon as she hung up, she felt the weight of the responsibility settle on her shoulders. She took a deep breath, reminded herself that she had been handling challenges since the day she arrived in New Zealand. This was just another one.
Over the next few hours, Nadia threw herself into preparation. She reviewed the project notes, updated the progress reports, and carefully went over every detail that the client might ask about. Her heart raced as the clock ticked closer to the meeting time.
At 3 p.m., she logged into the virtual meeting with the client's team. Her palms were slightly sweaty, but she kept her nerves in check. As the client's representatives appeared on screen, Nadia felt a moment of uncertainty. Would they take her seriously?
But as the meeting progressed, something shifted. Nadia found herself speaking with confidence, answering their questions with precision, and even suggesting a few solutions to the concerns they raised. The client seemed impressed, nodding along and even complimenting the clarity of her presentation.
By the end of the call, Nadia felt a surge of relief. She had handled it. Not only that, she had thrived under pressure.
Later that evening, back at the shared apartment, Nadia was still buzzing from the day's events. She sat at the dining table, scrolling through some work notes, when Isla walked in, noticing the look on her face.
"You seem deep in thought. Something up?" Isla asked, sitting down across from her.
Nadia smiled. "Just survived my first major crisis at work."
Isla grinned. "I knew you would. You've got that 'handle anything' vibe."
Nadia laughed. "I don't know about that, but today was... intense."
Before she could continue, Aiden appeared at the kitchen entrance. He gave a polite nod to both of them before grabbing a bottle of water. Nadia's eyes briefly met his, and for a split second, she noticed something about him—his eyes spoke volumes. They seemed thoughtful, even quiet, but there was an intensity there, like he could sense more than he let on.
She quickly looked away, not wanting to seem rude, but the moment lingered. What is it about him? she wondered. He hadn't spoken much, but there was something about his presence—something that made her curious.
"Anyway, I'm just glad the weekend's here," Nadia said, bringing her attention back to Isla.
Isla nodded. "Maybe we should celebrate. How about a beach day tomorrow?"
Nadia grinned. "That sounds perfect."
As they chatted about weekend plans, Nadia couldn't help but reflect on how much she had grown in the past few weeks. From navigating work challenges to adjusting to a new life in Napier, she was beginning to feel like she could handle whatever came next—even if that included figuring out the enigma that was Aiden Blackwood.
