**A month & 1/2 later**
The bar was buzzing with energy, the kind of lively atmosphere that made everything feel a little brighter. It felt good to be back. I leaned against the counter, a drink in my good hand while my cast rested on the bar. Across from me, Dick was practically glowing, still caught up in the excitement of his recent engagement to Kori. "Jay, it was perfect," he said, his voice full of enthusiasm. "I found this little spot overlooking the bay, and when the sunset hit just right..." He trailed off, a dreamy smile spreading across his face.
"Yeah, but I was half-expecting you to trip and end up in the water," I teased, "That would've been quite the story."
"Hey! I handled myself like a pro!" he shot back. "But honestly, Kori kept me grounded. She's amazing."
I couldn't help but smile at the way my brother's face lit up. "I'm really happy for you, Dick. You two are perfect together. I . . ." I fidgeted with my shirt, " . . . I know things might change now that you're getting serious, and it is going to be different not having you around as much. But honestly? I couldn't be prouder of you, man. You deserve all of this. Seeing you with Kori—how she makes you light up—it just makes me really happy. I've always looked up to you, and watching you grow into this, it makes me feel lucky to call you my brother." I cleared my throat and pushed away the emotions that were starting to bubble up, "Just know that no matter where life takes us, I'll always be in your corner, cheering you on. You've got my back, and I'll always have yours. Nothing's going to change that, alright?"
His grin softened, and he pulled me into a hug. "Thanks, Jay. That really means a lot. But I'm not going anywhere, I promise."
I laughed, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. I needed to hear that, even if he didn't have to say it. I quickly pushed him away, "Alright, alright! Enough with the sappy stuff. We're here to celebrate, remember?"
He chuckled, "You're right!"
"Duh I'm always right. Now, let's get back to the real reason we're here, burgers and bad decisions!" As I took a big bite of the thick, juicy burger, a wave of pure bliss hit me. The flavors exploded in my mouth, and I couldn't help but smile, feeling a warm rush of nostalgia wash over me. "Damn, Mikey still knows how to cook," I said, savoring the flavor. "I'll have to swing by and see him soon."
Dick glanced at me, concerned, "You're still on the mend, Jason. Don't overdo it. We don't want you pushing yourself too hard."
"Yeah, yeah, I know," I replied, waving him off playfully. "But I've got to stop by as you know who. Mikey will want to hear all about my glorious adventures."
"Uh huh, and no drinking too much. You're still recovering."
I raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry Mommy, I'll behave." But I couldn't help the smirk that tugged at my lips. It was nice to have someone looking out for me, even if it felt a little overprotective. I took another bite of my burger and melted at the taste. "Mhmm," I moaned.
"Speaking of behaving, the last time I saw you, I nearly arrested you. I hope I don't have to worry about any more pat-downs?" He looked me up and down, a playful smirk on his face.
I nervously smiled, trying to keep it light. "Oh, don't worry, Jay, I'm kidding!" He scooted closer, squinting at me. "Unless you give me a reason to—"
Before he could finish, I slapped my hand over his mouth. "Nope! Cut that cop crap. None of that here, buddy. Tonight is about having a good time."
"Well, with you, it's always 'time,'" he laughed, grabbing a fry and taking a big bite. "Man, this food is really good."
