Her dreams were always blurred and dark. She squinted her eyes tightly and crunched up her face, trying to make the pictures clear until she finally gave up.
Her baby blue eyes opened to the dark alley. She looked around slowly, and her gaze landed on the green container that held all kinds of rubbish: rotten food, empty packets, and more.
She felt a burning sensation in her stomach, as if her intestines were eating themselves.
Her light brown hair covered her face, and she shook her head roughly to get it back in place.
The color of her hair was really starting to change to dark brown due to dirt, with strands going in all directions.
She placed her hands on the wall behind her and pulled herself up to a standing position.
The light blue hospital dress still covered her body, just like it had three days ago when she ran out of the hospital.
The only difference was that the dress was dirty, and so was her skin, which itched badly most of the time.
This kind of appearance made most people shoo her away while calling her mad, but she sincerely wasn't.
Sadly, she never remembered who she really was, except for her name. Her feet led her to the container, and she started searching for anything she could eat. She couldn't remember the last time she had eaten, but the way her stomach hurt made it feel like ages.
She saw a blue polythene bag and pulled it on top, her hands hurriedly opening it while her eyes scanned the area to see if anyone was watching who might want to take away her new prize.
Her eyes moved back to the now-opened polythene, and she smiled. It contained leftover food mixed with bones and a few scraps of paper, but little did she care.
She removed the paper and scraps and started devouring the food. Her eating habits, from afar, looked like those of a dog, but who would care while on the streets?
"You!" A loud, deep voice made her freeze, the food in her hands falling back into the container. She lifted her head as her hand wrapped the blue polythene bag tightly so she could hide it.
The security guard, who was always dressed in a blue uniform with brown eyes and blonde hair, worked for the restaurant that always dumped rubbish in that same container. He had been her latest problem for the past three days, ever since she ran out of the hospital and camped here.
"Put that back, you dog!" he roared, and she took a step back, her eyes still on him.
She stepped into a small pool of dirty water, but that didn't stop her. She grabbed the food and pulled it out quickly, hiding it behind her, but his eyes had already followed.
He took hard, fast steps toward her, not giving her a chance to think of any solution, and grabbed her by the neck, pulling her off her feet.
"Bitch!" Her eyes widened, her hands dropped whatever they were holding, and moved over to his arm, holding it tightly as if trying to ease his grip. She could feel all her breath drain away.
It felt like she was a toy for him to vent his anger on. Why was he so keen on hurting her when she had done nothing wrong?
"Please, let me go!" Her words came out in gasps, her eyes rolling back. She started swinging her legs to and fro in a rebellious way until her leg hit something hard.
A loud growl escaped the guard's lips as he let her go, and she fell back on her feet, holding onto the green container to stop herself from losing her balance. Her eyes moved back to the security guard, who had fallen on the floor, clutching the middle part of his trousers as if to stop the pain.
She knew that if he stood up, it would be more trouble for her, so she turned around on the balls of her feet and ran off as fast as she could.
The streetlights lit up the emptiness as she ran down the street from the dark alley.
Her dress clung to her body; she didn't know where she was going but just kept running.
She swerved into the road to cross to the other end when a car stopped a few feet away from her, making her freeze in shock.
Her blue eyes widened as sweat broke out on her forehead.
"Are you so eager to die?" A loud voice made her turn around, gazing at the black SUV that had almost killed her.
She didn't know what to say or whisper. The man in the passenger seat opened the door harshly and stepped out.
Her eyes looked over to him—his height and built body, with beautiful blue eyes and red hair—but his cold demeanor made sweat break out even more on her forehead.
She tried to gulp hard, but the lump in her throat seemed unwilling to move. With shaking legs, she took a step back as he closed the door and walked over to her.
She felt the urge to run, but her mind and legs thought otherwise.
Another sound of a door closing pulled her attention toward the driver, who was also outside, watching her.
His blonde hair and blue eyes stood out, adding to his cuteness, but now she feared every creature called man.
"Mad girl, what do you think you were doing running into the road like that?" the driver asked calmly as he leaned on the front of the car, staring at her. The way his friend started to walk around her tiny body, checking her out, made her feel uncomfortable, and more thoughts kept racing through her mind.
"I think we can replace the other girl you shot," the red-haired one said to the driver, a smirk playing on his lips that made her body react in alarm.
The word "shot" made her heart skip.
What were they talking about?
Were they going to kill her too?
Many questions kept racing through her mind.
He finally stopped checking her out and came to a halt in front of her, standing next to his friend, whom she had marked as the driver.
"What if Simeon finds out? That will be our end," the driver spoke up, and she took another step back, noticing the two were too engrossed in conversation.
"Then let's recruit her, and he won't know that one of the goods is missing."
When she reached a safe distance, Tessa turned around and started running as fast as she could, far away from the people who wanted to kill her.
She heard a bunch of footsteps behind her and increased her speed, but her knees hurt. She couldn't let them catch her, and she wasn't ready to lose her life without even getting a hint of who she was.
Lost in thought, she didn't notice her speed decreasing until a hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her to a stop. Then his other hand placed a white handkerchief over her nose.
She tried to fight, her hands gripping his hand tightly and pulling hard to make him let go, but it was all in vain.
All her energy started draining away; black dots flashed in front of her eyes as she blacked out.
