CHAPTER 2
● The Curse Unfolds ●
Namjoon sat across from Mr. Choi in the dimly lit study of the mansion. The air was thick with the scent of polished wood and old books, an ambiance fitting for the heavy tale the eccentric millionaire was about to tell. Outside, a storm brewed, casting flickers of lightning against the darkening sky, as though nature itself was on edge about the cursed ruby.Mr. Choi, a thin man with graying hair and nervous hands, clasped his fingers together, his gaze shifting uneasily from Namjoon to the door and back again. He leaned forward, voice low and trembling.
"It started hundreds of years ago," he began, his voice almost swallowed by the crackling fire in the hearth. "The ruby—known as the 'Blood Moon Stone'—was said to have been stolen from a temple in Burma by a warlord. Legend has it that the gem had been blessed by ancient spirits, meant to protect those who worshipped it. But when it was stolen, the spirits became vengeful."
Namjoon listened, his expression calm, though his mind was already picking apart the details. "And these spirits... they cursed the ruby?"
Choi nodded vigorously, his eyes wide with fear. "Every owner of the ruby has met a tragic end. There’s documentation of it! The warlord who stole it? He was struck down in battle not long after acquiring it. The ruby passed from hand to hand, and each time, the owner either died mysteriously or lost everything."
Namjoon crossed his arms, leaning back slightly. "That could be coincidence. Powerful families and wealthy individuals often have their share of enemies."
"But it doesn’t stop there," Choi interrupted, his voice rising in pitch. "The most recent owner before me—Lady Kwon—fell ill suddenly. A disease no doctor could explain. She wasted away, leaving behind her vast fortune to her niece, who promptly disappeared without a trace."
Namjoon kept his expression neutral, though the story certainly had its hooks. Still, he remained grounded in reality. "And now the ruby is stolen from you."
Choi’s face paled. "Yes. And... I fear whoever took it... they don’t know what they’ve unleashed."
Namjoon’s brow furrowed slightly. "But you don’t believe in the curse, do you, Mr. Choi?"
Choi hesitated. "I... I didn’t. But lately... strange things have been happening. Objects moving on their own. Cold drafts in rooms where there are no windows. And just last night, I heard... voices."
Namjoon leaned forward. "Voices?"
"Whispers," Choi clarified, his eyes darting around the room as though expecting the spirits themselves to emerge from the shadows. "Like someone was standing right beside me, murmuring in my ear."
