❝ can you figure me out?
just doin' to waste more time
on the couch ❞

"ALRIGHT, class, we'll be passing out the book we'll be reading! Just an FYI, if you have any damages on your book, let me know!"

"Any volunteers to help pass out books?"

Juniper's hand immediately sprang up, so did Lynn's. They both glared at each other, causing the teacher to nervously look at the two girls, before saying, "alright, Lynn and Juniper!"

Lynn made sure her scoff was loud enough for Juniper to hear, to which Juniper just rolled her eyes at. Lynn was being childish over some encounter. Well, she's pretty valid for acting like that, but c'mon.

The girls passed out the books to each student, bumping into each other once, but that was just it.

The teacher went on about the book, read an article about the author, stuff like that.

"...and in order to get a hundred, you'll be partnered up with your table partner!"

Juniper froze in her spot.

Her table partner was Lynn.

Hell no.

LYNN was currently on her way to Juniper's house, as basketball practice had just ended. It was her second basketball practice of the season, and she was on fire. Compliments from her coach, hadn't missed a single shot, and she gained a few glares from her jealous teammates.

Life is good.

That was until she'd arrived at the front door of Juniper's oh-so perfect house. The house was so Juniper coded: boring and dull. It stood proudly on a serene suburban neighborhood, its gray exterior and manicured lawn radiating perfection. Sharp gables and black-framed windows added a touch of sophistication, while the sad-looking front porch stood empty, and of course, fancy. A sleek two-car garage and a white SUV in the driveway completed the picture.

Lynn was startled when she heard Juniper's voice on the intercom doorbell. "Come in, sports."

"Rich people shit," mumbled Lynn, opening the door, entering the eerily quiet house. This place was a stark contrast to Lynn's lively home–calm, isolated, and to be honest, it felt...lonely.

Lynn felt a sense of discomfort as soon as she entered. The quietness was unsettling, and the realization that Juniper's house, despite its big size, was home to so few people only added to her discomfort.

Juniper was here, where are the other two?

"Lynn."

Lynn's head snapped up, and met with Juniper's emotionless ones. Juniper's eyes, normally bright with emotion, were surprisingly dull, a far cry from her usually vibrant demeanor.

Lynn cleared her throat awkwardly. "Juniper."

"Follow me."

Lynn obliged, quietly following behind Juniper, admiring the house as they went deeper into the place.

Finally, they made it to Juniper's room, which was a huge difference from the rest of the house.

Unlike the rest of the house, Juniper's room seemed more peaceful, calming Lynn's unease, with soft whites and gentle light featured a cozy bed with under-bed lighting. On one side, a wall-mounted display of trailing vines brought a touch of nature, the greens contrasting with the spotless walls. Beside the bed sat a sleek desk with colorful accent lights added a pop of color.

The room's clean lines and minimalist furniture brought a sense of calm. A plush rug and cozy LED lights added warmth, and everything had its place, creating a peaceful retreat.

Every aspect of the room, from the LED lights to the mirror stickers, screamed Juniper. Lynn could tell Juniper had put thought and effort into creating a space that was truly her own.

"Ya like?" Juniper's voice snapped Lynn out of her thoughts.

Lynn shrugged nonchalantly. "Meh."

"You know damn well," Juniper replied, a ghost of a smile on her lips.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Lynn rolled her eyes, the memories of Juniper dragging her down to the ground still lingered in the back of her mind. She watched Juniper go into her walk-in closet (rich people shit, definitely), and then brought out a MacBook decorated with colorful stickers scattered all over it.

"What do we need that for?" Lynn asked, pointing at the now opened MacBook.

"What do you wanna do? Watch the movie first, or read the book?" before Lynn could reply, Juniper bursted, "not it!"

With Juniper's indecisiveness, it would've taken at least half an hour to pick either one.

"Watch."

"Okay, get comfy, I guess." Juniper shrugged. "Wait, TV or Macbook?"

Lynn sighed roughly before mumbling under her breath, "rich people."
