a smile on my face ❞AS the soothing melody of This Side of Paradise by Coyote Theory filled the room, Juniper and Lynn lay side by side on the soft, white carpet of Juniper's room. It was one of those rare afternoons where they could relax right after school, with no practice to rush to. Juniper always wondered how Lynn managed to excel at every sport and still keep up with her classes. Sure, eighth grade wasn't the hardest year, but keeping up with all subjects while missing school for games was exhausting for Lynn.
"Lynn," Juniper murmured, her voice rising above the hum of the record player. Lynn shifted her attention to Juniper, who was engrossed in studying the canvas they had painted together. The result was far from the vision they had–just a series of random splashes and smears of color.
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever wonder if we'd even be friends now if I hadn't knocked on your door that night?" Juniper asked, her voice sincere. Lynn stopped for a moment, her mind working to process the question. She'd never thought about it before. It felt like their friendship was always meant to be, like they had known each other forever.
"I mean, no, not really."
The room fell silent.
The quiet was soon overtaken by the sound of music.
I don't care how long it takes
As long as I'm with you
I've got a smile on my faceThe lyrics seemed to resonate with Juniper, reminding her of a certain someone. A sporty brunette, who had a thing for the color red.
Lynn Loud.
Aside from her cousin Darla, Lynn was the only one Juniper felt she could count on. It was funny, considering how just a few weeks ago, they were fighting over something so pointless.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Lynn's voice broke through Juniper's thoughts. Juniper shifted her focus from the messy canvas to look at Lynn.
With a sigh, Juniper hesitated, unsure whether to share her feelings. "I don't know...it's just, I feel like I could trust you with anything, y'know? Sorry if that sounds a little corny."
