Jenna's heart raced as the library lights flickered ominously. The soft hum of fluorescent bulbs overhead created an eerie atmosphere. She and Alex exchanged a glance, both sensing the same thing—someone, or something, was watching them. But who could it be? Had their search already drawn unwanted attention?
Alex quickly folded the article about the Silver Crescent Society and slipped it into his pocket. "We need to get out of here," he whispered, the tension in his voice unmistakable.
They quietly left the archives section, moving towards the exit with feigned calm. Jenna couldn't shake the feeling of eyes boring into the back of her head. She scanned the rows of dusty bookshelves, half expecting a figure to emerge from the shadows. As they reached the door, the librarian's sharp eyes followed them. Jenna hesitated, but the woman didn't say anything—just watched, as if she knew something they didn't.
Outside, the chill of the evening air hit them. Jenna and Alex walked quickly, but not fast enough to draw attention. "That librarian," Jenna murmured, "I think she knows more than she's letting on."
Alex nodded. "But we can't go back in there. Not now." He glanced over his shoulder as they reached the corner of the street. The streets were empty, too quiet for the usual bustle of Maplewood. Something was off, and they both felt it.
As they rounded the corner, Alex pulled out the article and read aloud the part that had caught his attention. "The Silver Crescent Society was rumored to consist of influential town members—politicians, business owners, even law enforcement—who disappeared mysteriously in the late 1980s. Their disappearance was never solved, and the Society faded into town folklore."
Jenna frowned. "Do you think Clara was trying to find out if the Society still exists?"
"I don't know," Alex replied, "but it sounds like they were hiding something huge. And whatever it is, it might still be hidden somewhere in this town."
Before Jenna could respond, a loud rustling from behind made them both freeze. The bushes nearby shifted violently, and then, without warning, a figure in a dark hooded jacket emerged, sprinting toward them.
"Run!" Alex shouted, grabbing Jenna's arm as they bolted down the street, their footsteps pounding against the pavement.
