The heavy door slammed shut, its echo filling the chamber and sending a shiver through Jenna. She dashed back to the entrance, her hands pressing against the cold metal, frantically searching for a handle or latch. But there was nothing—no way out. The door was sealed, trapping them inside the eerie room with the altar.
"Alex," she whispered, her voice tinged with panic. "We're locked in."
Alex moved beside her, pressing his hands against the door, but it didn't budge. His face was pale, yet determined. "We can't panic. There has to be a reason they brought us here."
Jenna turned, her gaze landing on the strange symbols covering the altar. They seemed to pulse with a faint glow, like they were alive, waiting for someone—maybe her and Alex—to solve their mystery. She took a step closer, feeling an odd pull toward the center of the chamber.
The altar was an ancient stone slab, its surface covered in carvings of intricate symbols. At its center, the largest silver crescent gleamed under her flashlight's beam. Scattered around it were dusty, old books and pages of notes written in spidery handwriting. She picked up one of the notes, her eyes skimming over the barely legible words.
"Alex, look at this." She held the note toward him. The writing spoke of "the initiation" and "a test of the mind and spirit." Her heart skipped a beat as she read. "I think... I think they trapped us in here to test us."
Alex frowned, studying the symbols. "A test? For what?"
Jenna's gaze moved back to the altar, and she noticed something she hadn't seen before: a small, round indentation near the crescent, like a keyhole. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the silver crescent pendant they'd found in the hidden compartment back at Clara's place. Her hands trembled as she held it up, realizing it was an exact match for the shape on the altar.
"Do you think..." she began, but Alex had already seen it too.
"Try it," he urged.
With a deep breath, Jenna fit the pendant into the indentation. As soon as it clicked into place, a deep, low rumble reverberated through the room, and the carvings on the altar began to glow brighter. The air grew colder, and a gust of wind seemed to sweep through the sealed chamber, causing the pages on the floor to flutter wildly.
Suddenly, the silver crescent on the altar started to sink, as if being pulled inward. Jenna and Alex stepped back, watching in awe as the stone slab shifted, revealing a hidden compartment beneath it. Inside was a small, ancient-looking box, decorated with the same crescent symbols.
Jenna reached for the box, her fingers brushing its surface, but just as she lifted it, a shadowy figure appeared in the far corner of the room, watching them with unblinking eyes.
