The morning sun filtered through the curtains of Jenna's room, but the warmth did little to chase away the chill that had settled in her bones. The message on Clara's phone, "Stay away. You don't know what you're getting into," echoed in her mind. Who had sent it, and what had Clara stumbled upon? Jenna couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out, and if she didn't act fast, she might never see her friend again.
Desperate for answers, Jenna headed to Clara's house. Alex, Clara's older brother, greeted her at the door, his face a mirror of Jenna's own worry. He had been up all night calling people, checking hospitals, and trying to make sense of Clara's sudden disappearance. Jenna hesitated for a moment before showing him the messages she had found on Clara's phone.
Alex's brow furrowed as he scrolled through the cryptic texts. "Clara mentioned she was looking into something," he said, his voice low. "She didn't give me many details, but I know she was reading a lot about old cases from this town. Unsolved disappearances, murders, that sort of thing."
Jenna's stomach tightened. "You think she found something?" she asked.
Alex nodded slowly. "It seems like it. Maybe something dangerous."
Determined to follow whatever leads they could find, they started by searching Clara's room. Among the clutter of textbooks and notebooks, Jenna found something odd—a small, worn journal hidden under Clara's bed. As they flipped through the pages, they realized it wasn't Clara's diary. It was filled with newspaper clippings, notes, and maps of the town, all connected to mysterious events dating back decades.
One name kept appearing: The Society of the Silver Crescent. Neither Jenna nor Alex had ever heard of it, but Clara had circled the name repeatedly, drawing arrows and writing frantic notes in the margins. "The truth is buried deep" was scrawled across the bottom of one page in bold letters.
Just as they began piecing things together, the sound of footsteps echoed from the hallway. Jenna and Alex froze. Someone was outside the door, listening. Their eyes met in silent terror.
