The shadowy figure's words echoed in Jenna's mind, mingling with a deep, unsettling silence that filled the chamber. She and Alex exchanged a wary glance, their eyes falling on the scroll lying open on the altar. The silver thread around it seemed to pulse, as if alive, and a faint, almost imperceptible hum vibrated through the air.
Jenna's fingers hovered over the scroll, her pulse quickening. The scroll was ancient, worn by time, yet the ink on it glowed faintly under the dim light, as though some force had preserved it.
"Are we really going to do this?" Alex asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jenna swallowed, her throat dry, but she nodded. "Clara risked everything for this. If it holds answers... we have to know."
She gently untied the silver thread, and the scroll unraveled, revealing intricate symbols that twisted and curled across the parchment. The writing was unlike anything Jenna had seen before—a mixture of ancient languages and strange glyphs that seemed to shift and change as she stared at them, as if hiding their true meaning.
Jenna felt a sudden sharpness in her mind, like something probing her thoughts. A faint voice, more of a whisper than a sound, seemed to speak directly to her.
"To seek the knowledge within is to surrender a part of oneself."
The whisper slipped into her consciousness, filling her with a strange mixture of dread and curiosity. She glanced at Alex, his eyes wide, as if he'd heard the same thing.
"Did... did you hear that too?" he asked, his face pale.
Jenna nodded, too shaken to speak. She looked back down at the scroll, her eyes drawn to a specific phrase that now glowed brighter than the rest, as though calling her.
"Through sacrifice comes enlightenment."
Without thinking, Jenna's hand drifted toward the scroll. Her fingers touched the glowing text, and in an instant, a jolt of energy surged through her, cold and searing, like icy fire racing through her veins. Images flashed before her eyes—visions of people she didn't know, memories of dark rituals, secrets whispered in the dead of night. It felt as though she were glimpsing centuries of forbidden knowledge, absorbing pieces of each person who had come before her.
She gasped, pulling her hand back, her head spinning. The room swayed, and she stumbled, grabbing the edge of the altar to steady herself. Alex caught her arm, his grip firm, his face etched with worry.
"Are you okay?" he asked, panic creeping into his voice.
Jenna shook her head, the visions fading but leaving her with an intense, gnawing sensation, as though a shadow had settled inside her mind, something dark and ancient.
"I... I saw things, Alex. Horrible things. Secrets that... I don't know if we were ever meant to see."
The chamber felt colder, the darkness pressing in around them, and as she looked down at the scroll, she realized they had only just begun to uncover the cost of their quest for answers.
