Jenna's breath came in short gasps as she sprinted alongside Alex, the sound of footsteps closing in behind them. The hooded figure was gaining ground, and every instinct in Jenna screamed to run faster. The narrow streets of Maplewood blurred past them, and all she could focus on was the fear gnawing at her, the sense that they were inches from being caught.
"This way!" Alex hissed, tugging Jenna into a narrow alley between two old brick buildings. They pressed against the cool walls, trying to catch their breath in the shadows. The figure's footsteps echoed nearby, slowing as if they were searching for them. Jenna's heart hammered so loudly she feared it might give them away.
The seconds stretched on, each one filled with tense silence. They could hear the faint shuffle of the figure's boots on the sidewalk, pacing back and forth. Jenna held her breath, praying they wouldn't be discovered. After what felt like an eternity, the footsteps moved farther away, eventually fading into the distance.
Jenna exhaled shakily, her legs trembling. "Who the hell was that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Alex shook his head, equally rattled. "I don't know, but they were following us. Whoever it is, they're part of this, and they don't want us digging any further."
Jenna's mind raced. She thought about Clara, about the cryptic messages and the disturbing clues in the journal. Whoever this mysterious person was, they had something to hide—something tied to the Silver Crescent Society. Jenna shivered, realizing just how deep they were sinking into a dangerous game.
"We can't go back to my place," Alex said, scanning the street cautiously. "It's not safe, and if they're tracking us, they'll know where we live."
Jenna nodded in agreement. "What about Sam? Clara used to talk to him all the time. He might know something."
Sam had been a friend of Clara's for years, though Jenna hadn't spoken to him much recently. He was a bit of a recluse, but he was smart—and more importantly, he knew how to stay out of sight.
Alex hesitated but then nodded. "It's worth a shot. Let's go."
As they made their way through the darkened streets, Jenna couldn't shake the feeling that the answers they were looking for were even more dangerous than they'd imagined. Someone didn't want the truth to come out—and they were willing to chase them through the night to keep it hidden.
