'Together forever right?'. Beth was sitting on the couch, the clock showed that it was already 5.30pm, and still no sign of her husband Steve, who had promised to come straight home after work, which was already an hour and a half ago. The wedding photo, which she had been looking at more often in the last few weeks, was firmly pressed in her hand, the tears running down her cheeks and falling on her shirt, under which a swollen belly was hidden.

Her Steve, whom she had met when she was 21, was absolutely the man of her dreams. He was a real gentleman, and not in the sense that he was super tough, he was very caring and loving, the man that many girls dream of, but of which there are only a few in the world. And besides, she thought he was quite handsome, with his brown hair, a light beard and his six-pack.

It was as if they were a match made in heaven. They enjoyed going for walks together, doing active things during holidays. But they also loved a drink, occasionally sitting on the couch with a glass of wine or a beer, a piece of toast and a movie playing in the background. Her favorite vacation? The one to Kos, the island where Steve had proposed to her.

He had promised her when they stood at the altar together, that he would always be there for her, that he would give everything to fight for her, for his family, which he hoped to form together with her one day. But nothing seems further from the truth. That forever? That didn't seem to be a realistic vision of the future for a long time now.

It had already been 19 weeks since they found out that Beth was pregnant. They couldn't believe their eyes, after months of trying and constantly seeing on the pregnancy test that it hadn't worked, they were finally going to be mom and dad. But now she was sitting on the couch, she was 28 weeks pregnant and only she seemed to be happy with the fact that she was pregnant. Steve seemed to be mainly worried about other things...

Meanwhile the clock showed that it was already 6pm and still no sign of Steve. Again he was nowhere to be seen, as had often been the case lately. She wanted to make dinner, but there was nothing in the house, Steve would go to the supermarket after work to get food, so that they could cook together tonight and enjoy an evening together on the couch. At least, that is what Steve told her, as he had been saying several things lately, but then not following through.

Tears flowed from her eyes again, how could it be that her perfect world of 19 weeks ago had suddenly changed so much? How could it suddenly be that Steve only comes home about 3 or 4 hours later than he was supposed to? He often had appointments with colleagues to go for a drink after work, which she thought was perfectly fine. He especially had to keep up the habits he had, while she lay here tired on the couch because of the pregnancy, unable to do anything outside the home. But those other times, how could he be home so late those other times?

She looked down at her swollen belly, which her hand rubbed in an automatic reflex. A thousand questions were running through her head, but three stood head and shoulders above the rest. Does the little boy or girl currently growing in her belly have a daddy who loves him or her? Does she still love this man herself? Is she going to end up as a single mother?

And then, when the key was finally turned in the lock, Steve walked in. Not in the way Beth had expected, not in the way she had hoped. This was Steve, not the charming man who came home from work in his suit, like before when he went out for a drink with colleagues after his day of working from home. This was a Steve who smelled of alcohol, stood unsteadily on his feet, was completely sweaty and his clothes were covered in stains and anything but neat.
