Annie woke up in the middle of the night with the sound of the tv. It was very low but she heard it anyways. She slowly got up from the bed, glanced at sleepy Dean and walked towards the couch.
"What are you doing up?", she asked with a groggy voice while scratching her eye.Sam just looked up at her for one second before looking back at the tv. "Watching tv. George Foreman infomercial."
"Why aren't you asleep?"
"Can't sleep."
Annie sighed and sat on the other side of the couch, a little far from him. "Another nightmare?"
Sam looked at her, probably wondering how she knew. She was always asleep or not in the room when it happened.
"Quiet people listen to everything", She said, noticing his face, raising her shoulders. Sam smiled.
"Yea... Is nothing..."
"You always say that." Annie said it quietly and looked at the tv with her hands together on her lap. She fidget her fingers a little anxious when both went silent. Sam cleaned his throat and shifted on the couch.
"They're just nightmares," he started to speak again, voice quiet and soft. "About Jess."
"Uhm... I have them too."
"Yeah?", Sam looked at her, eyebrows raised.
"I mean, seeing someone burning on a ceiling is something hard to forget."
"Right..." he smileda little, with no humor, just kindness.
It was a quiet moment and there was only the light from the tv in the room. They were both speaking in a low tone to not wake up Dean. It felt intimate and comfortable.
"You should sleep on the bed."
"What? No..." Sam said quickly, looking at her.
She slowly looked at him too, her eyes shy as always. "This couch is not big enough for you, the bed is. I can stay on the couch."
"I'm fine on the couch."
"Don't be stubborn."
"I'm not stubborn!" His voice got a little higher. Annie rolled her eyes and looked back at the tv shaking her head. "You're stubborn...", He murmured. Like a child.

In the morning Sam woke up and got out of bed, he got dressed and looked at Annie sleeping peacefully on the couch. Then he left to get some coffee.
Annie continued to sleep until she started to hear voices and realized it was Sam and Dean talking to each other.
"Yeah. But it's not just her. It's everything. I just forgot, you know? This job. Man, it gets to you."
"You can't let it. You can't bring it home like that." Dean said.
"So, what? All this it...never keeps you up at night?"
She didn't hear Dean's answer but she assumed he shook his head.
"Never? You're never afraid"
"No, not really."
Annie sat on the couch and looked at them. Sam reached under Dean's pillow to pull out a large hunting knife and held it up. Dean snatched the knife from Sam's hand.
"That's not fear. That is precaution."
"All right, whatever. I'm too tired to argue."
"I'm not..." Annie said, squinting her eyes, Dean turned to look at her, putting his hand on his thigh, "Everyone is afraid of something."
Dean's phone ringed before he could fight back and he started to talk to someone, apparently about a new potential case. Sam looked at Annie and smiled softly at her, which weirdly made her blush and get up from the couch.

During that day, Annie was very helpful with research, she managed to help them learn more about the plane accidents. For a minute there, Sam even felt truly happy she was around, before he remembered this life is dangerous and he would prefer if she was somewhere safe.
She didn't go on the plane, she was happy to stay behind even though she was worried sick.
Once they got in the road, she was finally able to breathe again. She took a nap until Dean stopped the car on a station to buy some food.
"So how was it? On the plane?", Annie asked, sitting down and leaning forward placing her arm on the front seat.
Sam raised his shoulder. "Let's just say Dean is now terrified of flying."
Annie smiled, lying her chin on her arm. "It's crazy... A demon."
"I know...", Sam looked at the window and sighed, Annie sensed something was off.
"What is it? Was it too scary?"
"Nah... I mean yes but... It knew about Jessica and... Dean said they read minds, they're built to manipulate people. I can't stop thinking about it though."
"Demons read minds?", Annie raised an eyebrow. She cleaned her throat. "I can do some research if you want, i'm actually good at it..."
"Yeah, that'd be great."
"There's probably a reason why it knew about her." Annie said out loud while getting lost in her thoughts.
"That's what worries me."
