Seoul, South Korea - a city bustling with life, yet, for Bae Joohyun, it felt like an echo of loneliness despite the love she had once promised to her husband, Kang Y/N. She stood by the window of their penthouse apartment, watching the rain drizzle softly against the glass, reflecting the cracks in her own heart. She was 33, a well-known idol as part of Red Velvet, but her fame meant nothing in the face of her guilt.
The love story that had once blossomed between her and Kang Y/N had faded, and now she found herself entangled in a forbidden relationship with one of Y/N's closest friends, Kim Suho. Suho was a comfort, a thrill she hadn't expected, but in the quiet moments, when she looked into her husband's eyes, she felt the weight of her betrayal pulling her under.
But fate had a way of unraveling the lies people told themselves, and Joohyun's would soon be exposed in the most devastating way.
It was a warm autumn morning in Seoul when Kang Y/N, a Jungnyeong (Captain) in the Korean Armed Forces, received the news that would change his life. The war between the two states had reignited, and his unit, the elite 13th Special Mission Brigade - known as the Black Panthers - was among the first to be deployed.
Y/N had always been stoic, a man of few words but strong principles. His job as a soldier demanded sacrifices, but for the past year, he had been grappling with a greater personal battle. He knew about Joohyun's affair with Suho. His silence wasn't weakness-it was calculation. He wanted to give her a chance to come clean, to confess and face the consequences of her actions. But she never did.
The night before his deployment, Y/N sat in his study, penning a letter. His hand shook slightly as he wrote, his thoughts heavy.
"Joohyun,
By the time you read this, I will be gone. Maybe I won't return. I have given everything to us, but it seems I wasn't enough. I knew about you and Suho... I knew all along. But I stayed, hoping you would tell me the truth. You didn't. I've attached the divorce papers-sign them if you wish. If you don't, it won't matter in the end. I'll be gone either way.
I loved you once. But now, I just want peace.
Goodbye, Joohyun.
- Y/N"
He carefully folded the letter and placed it on the dining table, along with the divorce papers.
Y/N stood at the military base early the next morning, dressed in his black combat uniform, the Black Panther insignia stitched on his arm. His comrades, his brothers-in-arms, were there too-along with some of their families. His younger sister, Seulgi, who was also Joohyun's bandmate, stood silently beside him. She had always admired her brother, but today, her heart ached.
"Oppa," Seulgi whispered, looking up at him. "Do you think she'll come?"
Y/N's jaw tightened. He looked at his watch briefly before turning to face the tarmac, where the planes were being prepped. "I don't know."
In truth, Joohyun had no idea. She had been out late with Suho the night before and hadn't checked her messages. She didn't know her husband was leaving, possibly forever.
Seulgi watched her brother, her chest tight with anger. Joohyun had been a sister to her, but Seulgi knew about the affair, too. She had stayed quiet for Y/N's sake, but now, as they stood there, waiting for Joohyun's arrival, it felt like a betrayal too far.
At that moment, Irene (as Joohyun was known on stage) was across the city, sitting in a quiet café with Suho, smiling as they shared a quiet moment over coffee.
