Rue's POV:

"THE GREEN ONE" Anne said as she picked the green dress out of my wardrobe. "It brings out your eyes" She threw it on the bed as I finished my makeup.

It's a few hours after school and only 15 minutes before Derek picks me up for his family gathering.

I am anything but prepared. It feels as if I know nothing for a test and I might not make it past seventy.

I finished my minimalist makeup with my favorite gloss and picked the dress from my bed to go change.

It's a sage green dress with spaghetti straps that is knotted at the waist. It falls right above my knees and I love it. I got it without any definite intentions unaware that it would be worn when I fake date Derek Smith.

Still sounds as absurd as it did yesterday.

I sighed dramatically as I looked at myself in the mirror.

Dang I'm hot.

I looked at my glasses that lied on the vanity table.

I don't need to hide.

I just want to.

"Rue! Are you done?" Anne screamed even if I was only separated by a curtain.

I laughed as I drew the curtain aside for the big reveal.

I did a small twirl.

"So? How do I look? Rich and cunning?"

Anne did a squeal as she dramatically fell on the bed. "Derek is going to wish he was dating you for real."

"Yeah, he wishes." I chuckled as I thought about him.

He'd probably apply gel to his hair today. All in vain of course. The best hair gel in the world can't tame that dense forest.

I smiled as I thought about what corny joke he'd crack today in an attempt to make me smile.

Wait what? Why would he make me smile?

Shut up Aaru. You're getting sidetracked.

The bell rung as my eyes shot up.

It's him.

I haven't worn my heels yet.

"Anne get my heels I have to get the door!" I yelled as I ran down the stairs.

"Aaru kaun hai?" My mom asked from her room.

(Aaru who is it?)

I opened the door and was immediately met with a sight to behold.

Not in my sight but someone's sight for sure.

It was Derek. He wore a black suit with a red tie. His black hair was definitely gelled but strands were still falling on his forehead.

He leaned against the door frame, his brown eyes trained on me as I noticed the cigarette in his mouth.

He smokes now?

Nope never mind it's a lollipop.

"Hi" I greeted awkwardly.

He didn't show any signs of acknowledgment as he kept staring, his mouth slightly ajar.

I raised my eyebrow and he opened his mouth to say something but the lollipop fell out. My hand went straight to cover my mouth as I controlled the erupting laughter.

"Oh god- I'm so sorry" Derek said as he picked it up and threw it across the yard.

"Aaru who has come?" My mom asked from directly a few feet behind me.
