For the last week, I have been busy planning the bridal shower for my best friend. Even though she knew about it, the bridesmaid decided to work with it under her nose. We wanted this to be a surprise, and so we had planned to throw the party a few days earlier than the scheduled time. We also knew that if she knew this party was going to be thrown, she would be bringing all the qualities that make a great planner but not necessarily someone who will enjoy their moment.
This bridal shower was for her. For her to feel special and spend time hanging out with her loved ones without the constant worry. We throw the party at their apartment, fully decorating the living room and kitchen while Miles takes her out on a date. He had planned to keep her busy by ordering lunch and then going somewhere. I'm not sure exactly what they were up to, but I know that we had a place to work. Also, Evie had been taken by her grandparents, who were caring for her.
After managing to piece together the party that we had organized on paper, I'm proud of our handy work. I loved how the place looked, with pink and white decor. There were bouquets of flowers all around the place and streamers that matched. The lights were dimmed to a lower setting, and the new LED lights we bought made the event cozy. If I knew Andrea in any way, I knew that she would prefer this more than anything else.
We would sit around and eat the food that we had prepared. Caroline had made her famous sugar cookies that the bride was in love with, and I had gone down to the local bakery to pick up the rest of the order. We would also be eating takeout from Andrea's favorite restaurant close to here.
After all of us girls are exhausted from prepping, we look at each other and sigh. Elena runs a hand down her face and says, "I'll be changing in the nursery, and someone else can take the bedroom."
"I could use a shower," I state, throwing a hand up as I head toward the bathroom. When I pass Hannah, she gives me a little smile, and I almost freeze in my steps. The entire few hours we have been working together, she hadn't made one snarky comment. It was almost as if the night from the other week had never happened. Hannah was back to being the sweet friend we had made so abruptly. It was concerning to think about her smiling at me, though. I am dating her ex-boyfriend. I understood why she had made the snarky comment in the first place.
I try to force a smile as I head into the bedroom and pick up my clothes. For this bridal shower, all the guests were asked to wear pastel-colored dresses. I was going to be wearing a pastel purple sundress that was tight in the bodice but flowy in the bottom. I really loved this dress and how the small detailing made a very big difference. After I take a shower, I come out dressed and. Feeling much better.
Caroline is sitting at the vanity, touching up her makeup. She gives me a smile when she sees me and says, "Want me to re-curl your hair?"
I move my hand to my hair. "Ugh, is it already frizzy?"
"You want the truth?" Caroline says, giving me a way out. But I knew the answer anyway, figured since I was in the shower. Sighing, I head over to her. She gets off the chair and pushes me onto it before grabbing the hair curler I had brought. We could have looked for Andreas, but I doubted she had a pair. She has only straightened her hair or blown-dry it, never in between.
Caroline is quick to do my hair, and towards the end, she slows down. I'm touching up my eyeliner when she catches my eyes in the mirror. "Jen?"
"Yeah," I whisper, feeling nervous all of a sudden from the soft way she called out my name.
She looks at me with equally soft eyes as she whispers, "What are you doing with Bash? Do you like him?"
"Oh, that's—" I pause, remembering what I had clarified to them the other day. I told them about our plan, and they hadn't commented much on it. There was nothing really to comment on considering it had already happened. "You know what I'm doing with him."
