— Author's POV —

"Hey Jia! Pass me the ball!" Riki called out to the girl who was sitting on the bleachers.

The girl looked up from her book, picking up the basketball pn the floor and throwing it back to the court.

The school's basketball team is currently practicing for the tournament at the end of the semester, and Jia came with Minji to watch the practice. Jia was not that interested though, instead studying to make up for her detention. Suddenly, Jia received a text message from an unknown number. Frowning she opened it cautiously, glancing at her best friend who was immersed in the practice game.

After checking the number and comparing it to a significant person's number she furrowed her eyebrows.

" . . . Dad?" Jia quietly mumbled to herself when she saw the message.

Unknown Number

: Park Jia, you are not getting away from this. As my daughter, you have to have a perfect reputation. I'm watching you. It doesn't mean that we are out of touch, I have forgotten about you, little brat. You'll pay the consequences of disappointing me a couple of times. And I will make sure you suffer...

Jia shivered in her seat, her eyes locked on her phone screen. She knew that the texts weren't really threatening and they sounded like empty threats, but she knew her father was a man of his words. And his words were never good if his daughter was the topic.

"Minji-ah, I'll just go to the bathroom for a sec." Jia informed her best friend who just nodded, distracted by the game.

Jia sighed, scared. What if he comes back? There's no way she was going to relive the trauma. Entering a bathroom stall and locking the door, she bent down and groaned, feeling unwell. Her stomach was churning, her face was sweating, and her head was pounding.

"E-eomma . . ." The girl grunted, tears coming to the surface. "Why does dad have to make me suffer like this?" Jia's voice cracked as she talked to herself.

TRIGGER WARNING!! ABUSIVE SCENE

"You ungrateful brat! How could you ask for a big birthday party!? Be happy I haven't disowned you!" Her angry father yelled, throwing a glass near the ten-year old girl.

"Appa, I think I deserve-"

"You think you deserve even a home . . . ? You think so? Well . . . You deserve NOTHING!" The man shouted, slapping the girl's face. "Get out of my face!"

"I hate this!" Jia sobbed to herself running out.

"WHAT DID YOU SAY, YOUNG MISS!?"

Jia sobbed, body shaking. "I said, I HATE THIS!" She screamed in agony. Her father glared through her soul, eyes piercing into the girl's.

"WELL I HATE YOU TOO! YOU WILL OBEY MY ORDERS AS LONG AS YOU STAY IN MY HOUSE! ONE WORD FROM YOUR FILTHY MOUTH AND YOU GET A SPANKING!"

The man crept closer with the broken glass, throwing it at the girl as she shielded her head with her bruised hands, crying. She felt a punch to her stomach, a slap in the face.

"GO AWAY AND LEAVE MY SIGHT! REMEMBER YOU DON'T DESERVE ANYTHING EXCEPT PAIN IN THIS WORLD!"

Jia ran up the stairs and into the attic, her recent newest bedroom. She locked the door and let out a tired sob.

The bruised girl cried out, "It's been three years! What have I done to suffer like this?"
