Emily sat across from Alex in the small café, the air thick with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Outside, the city buzzed with life, but inside, time seemed to stand still as she wrestled with the weight of her memories. Alex had been kind and patient, and now, as the rain tapped softly against the window, it felt like the right moment to share the story she had kept locked away for so long.

"I never thought I'd end up here, sharing this. But... it feels like it's time."

Alex leaned in, his expression encouraging, his warm brown eyes urging her to continue.

"I ran away from home when I was just fifteen." The words hung heavy in the air. "I was so young and scared, but I felt trapped." She looked down at her coffee, the steam rising like ghosts from her past. "It was suffocating, you know? My family life was... chaotic."

"So, you left?" Alex probed, sensing the layers beneath her words.

"Yeah." She replied, her heart pounding as she revisited that painful decision. "I thought I could escape the dysfunction, the fighting, the... everything. I wanted to be free, but I didn't realize that leaving meant abandoning my sister, Jules."

Emily's throat tightened as she continued. "I thought about her all the time. I wanted to save her from the hurt, but I felt powerless. I couldn't even help myself, let alone her." She shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface. "I tried to keep tabs on her through social media, to see how she was doing. I wanted to reach out, but I was terrified of what I might find."

"That must have been hard," Alex said, nodding in understanding.

"It was a nightmare," she admitted, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "When I saw her posts, it was like a glimpse into a world I used to be a part of—a world I thought I could escape. But I was just a spectator, watching her suffer from afar."

"And then you heard about her death?" Alex asked, his voice softening.

"Yeah," Emily said, her heart sinking as the memory crashed over her. "I found out through the red envelope in my room. At first, I thought it was some kind of sick joke. Inside, it said she was gone." She paused, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jules was bullied, and I always suspected it. I remember the whispers in the hallways and how she'd flinch whenever someone mentioned her name. But to hear that she was really gone... it shattered me."

"I can't imagine how you felt," Alex said, his voice filled with empathy.

"It was bizarre," Emily continued, her mind racing. "The way people acted like they knew her, like they cared. But where were they when she needed help? It felt wrong. I felt angry and guilty—angry at the world for letting it happen, guilty for not being there to save her."

"So, that's why you want to uncover the truth?" Alex asked, a flicker of admiration in his eyes.

"Exactly." Emily nodded, determination sparking within her. "I want to dig deeper, find out what really happened. I can't let her story end like this. It's too late for me to save her, but maybe I can uncover the truth and give her a voice, you know?"

"You're brave," he said, sincerity evident in his tone. "Not everyone would have the courage to face the past like that."

"I don't feel brave. I feel lost," Emily confessed, her heart heavy. "But I can't keep running away. I owe it to her to at least try."

As they talked, the café around them faded into the background, their conversation creating a bubble of shared understanding. For the first time in a long time, Emily felt the weight on her shoulders lift just a little. She wasn't alone in this fight. Alex was there, willing to stand by her side as she confronted the ghosts of her past.

"So, what's your plan?" he asked, leaning forward, a spark of excitement in his eyes.

"I'm not sure yet," Emily admitted. "But I'll start by digging into her social media, talking to her friends, anyone who might know what she went through. I need to find out who was there for her and who turned their backs. It might not lead anywhere, but I have to try."

"I'll help you," Alex declared, his resolve firm. "You don't have to do this alone."

Emily felt a warmth spread through her chest, gratitude blooming within her. "Thank you," she said softly, a small smile breaking through her sadness. "It means a lot to me."

As they sat there, surrounded by the hum of life outside, Emily felt a flicker of hope ignite within her. She might have lost her sister, but she wasn't about to lose herself in the process. With Alex by her side, she was ready to face whatever lay ahead, ready to uncover the truth and finally give Jules the justice she deserved.
