Linda paced around her living room, the dim light casting long shadows across the floor. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, each one spiraling deeper into anxiety. Ever since Sarah mentioned that Emily had come to see her, she couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that clung to her like a heavy fog. Why did Emily have to come back now?

As she wandered aimlessly, her fingers nervously toyed with the fraying hem of her sweater. She found herself mindlessly scrolling through social media, her heart racing each time a notification pinged. It was a futile effort, but she felt compelled to keep tabs on Emily's whereabouts. What if she was getting too involved?

Linda had always prided herself on being in control, especially when it came to her family. But the thought of Emily digging into Jules' past made her feel strangely powerless. This is my responsibility, she reminded herself. I'm the one who needs to find the truth. I can't let Emily interfere.

She shook her head, trying to clear the intrusive thoughts. But the more she tried, the more they consumed her. What if she starts asking questions? What if she finds something I missed? The idea of Emily getting involved in the investigation made Linda's blood boil.

"Ugh," she muttered under her breath, running a hand through her hair in frustration. "Why can't she just stay away?"

Linda couldn't pinpoint why Emily's return affected her so deeply. Maybe it was the guilt of their estranged relationship, or perhaps it was the fear that Emily would expose the wounds Linda had worked so hard to keep hidden. The last thing she wanted was to face the consequences of her past decisions—especially in front of Emily.

Determined to regain control, Linda decided to take matters into her own hands. She grabbed her phone, scrolling through her contacts and looking for anyone who might know about Emily's recent activities. As she dialed a number, a wave of irritation washed over her. Why should I have to do this?

"Hey, do you know where Emily is?" she asked, her voice laced with urgency. The response was vague, but it only fueled her anxiety. After hanging up, she paced again, her thoughts racing.

"Why is she back?" she murmured, her brow furrowing. "What does she want?"

The image of Emily's face flashed in her mind, full of determination and anger. Linda hated how easily Emily seemed to slip into a role of authority, as if she had the right to demand answers. Linda felt the tightness in her chest grow stronger with each passing moment. She needs to stay out of this.

Linda plopped down onto the couch, her mind racing. She pulled a throw blanket over her legs, clutching it like a lifeline. No one else will understand this like I do. I know what needs to be done.

Yet the nagging thought of Emily crept back in, refusing to leave her alone. What if she stirs up trouble? What if she gets hurt?

Linda clenched her jaw, a surge of protectiveness mixed with annoyance bubbling up inside her. "I can handle this," she said to herself, her voice firm yet trembling. "I'm the only one who can make things right. She just needs to stay out of my way."

As the weight of her thoughts pressed down on her, Linda knew she had to act fast. She needed to figure out Emily's next move before she could make any waves. The thought of Emily being involved in this case made her skin crawl.

I can't let that happen, she vowed, determination igniting within her. She would protect her family—whatever it took.
