Afterlife: Shika
Mid-summer was supposed to be calm. Low cursed energy meant a low amount of curses. Low curses meant a low number of people losing their lives. That's why it was calm it's supposed to be calm.
"Sorry, repeat that?" I said, looking at Tatsuko.
She looked at me as she moved around the room, organizing her things. Her office was on the highest floor in the tallest building in Tokyo. She was the boss here, but I did the majority of her work. She wasn't human like everyone else. She had wings like a creature. Both of her wings were that of an angel. Featherly and thick. Except the left was black, and the right was white. Her hair was kept in a bun. The left was black, and the right was white. She was supposedly the vision of good and evil here. She placed her books on the table, taking a seat and opening one of them before she turned to me.
"A large group of people from a village no one gives two shits about, have bit the dust. I need you to greet them." She smiled.
I sighed as my gaze wondered away from her. "That's your job."
"No, my job is to judge them." She said, flexing her wings.
Supposedly, her job was to determine who went up and who went down. But I had never seen her do her job ever.
I sighed. "Fine. I'll handle it."
She clasped her hands as she smiled at me. "Excellent. There at terminal C749563. They've been waiting for a while, so head over there."
"No, I'll take my time since this is my job now."
She let her shoulders and wings fall disappointed in my response. I left the office and headed to the city. The afterlife is what we call it. The land where all souls ended up. The place is an exact replica of the living world. If it rained for them, it rained for us. If a part of the city was destroyed, a part of our city was destroyed. For anything that happened was considered the past, it ended up here. otherwise, it was normal. Death was normal. I entered the library that was close to Tatsuko's office. The reception desk was across from the entrance, and shelves filled with books behind the desk. Ailses line the room in rows, not a single book out of pkace or off the shelf. Some of the books glowed, showing life, while others dimmed out, signaling the end of a life.
I walked over to the desk, resting my head on the counter as I looked at the woman who was reading a book.
"Kaori evening." I greeted blankly.
Kaori smiled at me, always happy to see me. "Evening Shika. How can I help you?" She asked.
I stood up, placing my hand on my hip and lightly tapping the desk with my other. "A bunch of people arrived at terminal C749563. Mind giving me the book of the person who sent them there."
Kaori seemed both bothered and glad that I had asked. Usually, I didn't care who killed who when they arrived here. But a whole village was destroyed all killed by the same person, hence why they were at the same terminal. I had to know what person caused such destruction. Kaori led me to one of the aisles near the entrance. I watched as some of the books stopped glowing as Kaori climbed a ladder on the opposite shelf that I was watching. She pulled back a book from the shelf and slid down the ladder. She handed the book to me, and I held it. It still glowed, so the person was alive. I figured they were. I looked at the cover of the book, and Kaori walked back to her desk, and I followed her standing in front of her desk.
Suguru Geto. Age 17. Geez, what happened in this kid life to massacre people.
I opened the book, flipping through the pages, looking through key moments. I stopped at the more recent pages, taking note of who this Suguru considered to be his only and best friend.
