Afterlife: Shika

"A technique?" Juri asked.

It was a few hours before midnight when I came to visit her at her home. She was still rather exhausted from the fight earlier today, but for the most part, she had recovered. Hideshi walked over to Juri, bringing her a cup of tea, which she carefully took as she smiled.

"Thank you." She spoke. She then turned back to me as Hideshi sat beside her. "Now, what did you mean I have a cursed technique?"

"Durning your match with Tatsuko, I noticed that your cursed energy rose way beyond your max, so I looked into it." I raised my finger before I paused. I sensed Suguru down the hall, most likely listening to our conversation. I choose my next words carefully. "Normally, one can gain more cursed energy over the course of time, but having yours spike like that instantly was odd to me. I found out that you have an inherited technique called Adrenaline."

Juri titled her head. She sides eyed Suguru down the hall before smiling back at me. "I see." She said, taking a sip of her tea.

That reaction was obvious she already knew about the technique. She just didn't think she'd have it. And then there was her son. As I assumed, she didn't tell him about it. I was right to tread carefully with my words.

"The technique doesn't work like other techniques. At least not to my knowledge. As I said, people can gain cursed energy over time. But they burn through cursed energy when they use their technique, or they let their emotions take control. Cause of this, not all sorcerers can fight forever besides a select few that have infinite cursed energy. Back to how your technique works. It lets you turn your emotions into either cursed energy or adrenaline. And from there, you can also turn cursed energy into adrenaline. This lets you surpass normal limits. In other words, you become as strong, fast, and skilled as someone with a heavenly restriction."

Suguru was still down the hall, seeming a bit off hearing my words. I couldn't tell what was going through his head as he left and went back to his room. Juri looked at him before she frowned.

"I'll talk to him." Hideshi said.

He got out of his seat, pushing his chair back to the counter as Juri lightly grabbed his arm. She looked at him as if telling him to keep quiet about something. Hideshi nodded as he left to Suguru's room. I waited for a second, watching Hideshi leave, before I turned to Juri.

"Why haven't you told him?" I asked.

Juri faintly shrugged as she placed her tea on the table. "I would say cause Suguru killed me before I got the chance to tell him. But that would be an excuse, a terrible one. I just couldn't." She lightly spun her mug on the counter before speaking. "How did you find out?" She asked.

I crossed my arms sitting upright. I crossed my legs and shrugged. "Your ancestor wanted me to do something. I researched the reason from there. You should tell him." I spoke.

Juri shrugged, trying to force a smile. "I don't think I can. That would break him."

"Huh?" I said, tilting my head.

"His entire mentally was thinking non-sorcerers shouldn't be protected or allowed to live. If I told him the truth, that mentality would shatter. Then what would he do?"

"I guess that makes sense. But you're in the afterlife. Either you tell him or someone else will."

"One day I will." Juri added.

It went quiet as she looked at her tea, staring at her faint reflection.

"May I ask you something?" I stated.
