Afterlife: Shika

Juri screamed from joy as she wrapped her arms around me, hugging me tightly. I had the honor of telling Juri that Tatsuko wouldn't kill her son. I looked at Juri before turning away. Tatsuko abiding to the terms she agreed to was odd. She was most likely in a good mood because I agreed to help her. I only agreed to figure out what she was really planning. Otoha and Riho came to me wanting me to break the balance, but the way Tatsuko put it made it seem like she had a different plan.

Juri let go of me as she went to speak to Hideshi about the good news. Suguru left his room hearing the commotion. His parents hugged him, celebrating the fact they wouldn't lose him again, but he didn't seem entertained by the idea. I was positive he still didn't want to be near them and risk their lives.

"Don't get too excited." I spoke.

Juri and Hideshi turned to look at me while Suguru kept his bored expression.

"You defeated Tatsuko. That doesn't happen often. That makes you a person of interest. Don't be excited about that." I added.

"You have such a negative outtake on things." Hideshi said. He smiled as he kissed his wife on the cheek and headed to the kitchen. "Why don't we make dinner tonight to celebrate. We can make your favorite Suguru."

Suguru shook his head. "I'm not staying for dinner, so you don't have to."

Juri pinched her son's cheek as she joined Hideshi in the kitchen. "Nonsense. Where else would you go."

Suguru was about to say something to his mother when he looked at me. I crossed my arms as I looked at him. "You're not staying with me. I've housed enough of your friends as it is." I stated.

He lightly glared at me before he sighed, just having to accept the situation.

"Also, Suguru. if you aren't going to die by Tatsuko's hand. There's a lot I have to show you. If you aren't busy." I spoke.

"It's not like I have nothing to do, I just don't have a choice. Where are we headed?"

I explained the most important rules to Suguru already. But there were still other things that needed to be shown. I took out my phone as we stopped at the sidewalk waiting for the crosswalk light to change. Despite the snow, people were still busy. The next event for the last week of the year would start this evening after the sun sets.

"Birthday or deathday?" I asked.

Suguru looked at me confused. "What's the difference?" He asked.

"One celebrates the day you were born. The other celebrates the day you died. That should be obvious."

"I'm asking what changes in choosing them," he lightly glared.

The light changed, and I spoke still on my phone as we crossed the street. Suguru listened, but he was busy looking both ways for the two of us.

"Choosing your birthday means you'll still be able to age. For example, if you die as a kid and choose your birthday, you can change your appearance to that of a teenager or adult when you reach that age. Think of it as still aging, just you're dead." We reached the other side and continued walking on the sidewalk. "You choose your deathday. You won't be able to age anymore, and you'll be fully committing to the staying in the afterlife. You'll be able to live here forever till you've had enough of it."

Suguru looked at me, taking a moment to think as he stopped. He placed his hand on his chin, and he thought with his eyes closed. I continued to speak.

"I have to tell you for legal reasons, I suppose. Juri, Hideshi, and Juju all chose their deathdays."
