aimee was allowed into the changing room once everyone was ready. she made her way to her brother, hugging him tightly.
"you're gonna do great," she muttered. "no matter what happens."
he hugged her back, "thanks aims."
he held her for a little longer. she waited for him to let go and when he did she went to leave, only for ted and nate to enter the room and announce that the latter was giving the pre-game talk. she sat back down, not wanting to take any attention away from the coach.
nate looked absolutely terrified.
"come on, boy. you got this," isaac encouraged.
sam did the same, "you got this, nate. it's okay."
nate stared at the paper, "okay, thank you." there was a pause as he collected himself. he cleared his throat. "isaac..."
isaac looked up from his shoes, thinking nate needed more encouragement, "oh, yeah, yeah. yeah, you got this, bruv, all right?"
aimee thought it incredibly endearing how isaac had gone from bullying nate to being so encouraging. him and colin had made strides in the people they were in such a short time and she was so proud to see it.
nate didn't look very happy with the praise, "i've noticed of late..." he paused, turning around to ted, who nodded for him to continue. "that you've been playing like a big, dumb pussy."
everyone's faces fell. aimee's mouth was agape at his words.
isaac pointed at the man, anger evident in his tone, "what the fuck did you say to me, bruv?"
"you're more concerned about looking tough than actually being tough. there's a way to be intimidating without being physical. i hope you don't mind me saying."
isaac retracted his finger, hand falling to his side as he realised nate was actually giving him some advice. bumbercatch hid in his hoodie as nate's eyes glanced around the room.
"sam."
sam frowned, "oh, no."
"you're constantly getting beat on the wings. it's 'cause you're indecisive, you second-guess more than a shitty psychic. the only african i know more imprisoned by their own thoughts is goddamn nelson mandela."
there were hoots of laughter as aimee stared, too scared to move in case nate suddenly decided to say something to her. she wasn't part of the team but she was not in a place where she could hear anything mean about her in such a way without crying.
colin laughed, turning to his sister, "did you hear that?"
aimee was shaking her head at him but it was too late. nate turned his attention to the man, "you think that's funny, do you, colin? you and all your fancy step over bullshit. let me ask you this. do you wax your pubes?"
