In the vastness of space, Samus Aran’s ship glided through the void, its sleek frame a blur against the backdrop of twinkling stars. The Cornerian Defense Force had always been vigilant, and now, as she entered their well-patrolled territory, the tension in the air seemed palpable. The asteroid belt loomed ahead, a maze of rocky debris drifting silently through the cosmos.
The cockpit hummed with life, the soft whir of machinery a comforting presence as Samus settled into her pilot’s seat. Her visor illuminated the controls, casting a faint glow around her as she navigated through the starry expanse. Suddenly, her console beeped, an incoming transmission sparking to life before her.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Samus Aran herself. I should’ve guessed it was you causing all that chatter in our sector.” The voice was unmistakable—Fox McCloud, brash and familiar.
A smirk crept beneath Samus’s helmet, her tone dry yet playful. “McCloud. Still out here flying that junk heap you call a ship?”
Fox's laughter crackled over the comms, his image flickering onto the screen. He looked a little older, battle-hardened, but the trademark grin was still there, a reminder of their past adventures together. “Hey now, The Great Fox is a classic. She may not be as sleek as that fancy gunship of yours, but she’s got character.”
“Character’s one way to put it. Looks like it’s been through one too many asteroid fields, if you ask me.” Samus shot back, teasingly.
“Last time I checked, we still saved your hide a few times. Or did the great Samus Aran forget about that little mess on Venom?”
“That was different. You were in the way.” Samus laughed softly, the light banter easing some of the tension in the air.
Fox leaned forward, his expression shifting from playful to serious. “Heard about the attacks on the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule. It’s all over the star systems. Doesn’t seem like your kind of trouble, though. What brings you out this far, Samus?”
Samus took a moment, her demeanor hardening as she focused on the gravity of her mission. “It’s bigger than just the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and Mario—yeah, that Mario—have formed some kind of twisted alliance. I’m sure they’ve got Ganondorf on board. This isn’t just a grab for Peach’s throne; this is a full-scale assault. They want to reshape everything. The Kongs, Hyrule—they’re next. I’m sure Sarasaland isn’t safe either”
Fox's eyes widened in disbelief, his voice filled with incredulity. “Wait, Mario? Mario Mario? Jumping plumber, red cap, saves the princess on weekends? That Mario?”
“The same. He’s not the hero you remember. Something’s changed in him, I don’t understand it—he’s darker now, ruthless. He’s coming for Peach’s throne, and he’s got Bowser and the others to back him up. But that’s not the worst part.”
Fox raised an eyebrow, leaning closer, the humor stripped from his voice. “What could possibly be worse than that rogues’ gallery teaming up?”
“The Space Pirates. They’ve disappeared. No raids, no sightings, no activity for weeks. I’ve been tracking them through their territory, but they’re nowhere to be found. There are reports that Andross claims they’re working for him now.”
“Well, that’s just great. If Andross has the Space Pirates, things are gonna get ugly fast. They’ve been quiet for too long, and if they’re part of this alliance, they’re gearing up for something big.” Fox understood the weight of her words.
“That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m headed to the asteroid belt to investigate. If the Space Pirates are hiding out there, we need to know what they’re planning before they make their move. I was hoping to run into you out here.”
Fox rubbed his chin thoughtfully, the tension visible in his eyes. “Funny you should say that. The team and I are on our way to the asteroid belt ourselves. We got a tip from one of our informants that something big’s going down there. Could be the same thing you’re sniffing out. Problem is, we’re still a few hours out. You’ll get there before we do.”
“That’s fine. I’ll send you intel once I’ve scouted the area. You know I work better solo anyway.”
“Yeah, yeah, lone wolf and all that. Just try not to get yourself blown to bits before we get there, alright? The last thing I need is to explain to the higher-ups how Samus Aran got herself iced on our watch.”
Samus chuckled, though her thoughts lingered on the danger that awaited her. “Wouldn’t want to hurt your reputation, McCloud. But you know as well as I do... this mission is more than just another scrape. Stay sharp out there. We can’t afford mistakes.”
The weight of her words hung in the silence that followed, the brief levity giving way to the cold reality of what lay ahead. Fox nodded solemnly through the comms. “Understood. We’ll be right behind you.”
“Understood.” Samus affirmed, her resolve steeling.
Fox gave a mock salute before his image flickered slightly. “Alright, Aran. I’ll keep the channel open. Ping us when you get to the belt, and we’ll meet up. And don’t go blowing up the entire asteroid field before we get there. Falco likes a challenge.”
“I’ll save you a few rocks to shoot.” Samus replied with a small smile.
As the transmission ended, the weight of her mission settled in once again. Samus leaned back in her seat, her thoughts racing. This mission felt heavier than those before it—a foreboding weight that pressed down on her chest. The alliance of her enemies was more than just troubling; it was a catalyst for chaos that threatened not only her friends but the very fabric of peace in the galaxy.
As the asteroid belt drew nearer in her viewport, Samus took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever awaited her. Her hand hovered over the comms panel one last time, thoughts drifting to Peach, to the Mushroom Kingdom, and the brewing war across the galaxy.
Samus glanced at a locket dangling from a control panel. A locket given to her from Peach. “Stay safe, Peach. I’ll be back soon.” She whispered to herself.
With her resolve firm, she engaged the ship’s thrusters, propelling herself toward the asteroid field at full speed. As her ship sliced through the darkness, the silence of space enveloped her, broken only by the rhythmic pulse of her engines.
