Inspired by all the Marceline and bubblegum costumes I've been seeing! But angsty...
You were standing in front of the mirror in the living room, adjusting the black wig on your head and laughing with your friend. It was one of those low-key days, just hanging out and trying on potential Halloween costumes. The apartment smelled faintly of the candle burning on the counter, and the late afternoon sun poured in through the windows.
Your friend, who had come over to help you figure out your costume, gave you a thumbs-up. "Honestly, you're pulling off the Marceline the Vampire Queen look way too well," they teased, laughing as they tossed a piece of candy into their mouth.
You were about to respond when the sound of the front door unlocking caught you off guard. You froze for a second, heart skipping a beat, knowing who it would be. The door swung open, and there she was—Kendall—walking in with her usual confident stride, the key you kept under the mat dangling from her fingers.
"Hey, baby!" she greeted, flashing that easygoing smile that always made your stomach do flips. She glanced at you, her smile shifting into something more curious. "What's with the black wig?"
You opened your mouth to respond, but before you could, your friend jumped in, oblivious to the tension that was about to unfold. "Oh, it's for Iris's family Halloween party! We're still figuring out the look, but honestly, I think it's perfect."
Your heart sank.
Kendall's brow furrowed in confusion. "Wait, what party?" She turned her full attention to you, her voice dropping slightly. "I thought we were going to all the Halloween parties together this year."
You could feel the tension rising in the room, your friend's words hanging in the air like a weight. You tried to play it off, taking the wig off and giving a weak laugh. "Oh, it's, um... just a small thing."
Your friend, still not realizing the shift in tone, glanced between you and Kendall. "I'm uh going to the bathroom," they muttered awkwardly before making a quick exit out of the room, leaving you and Kendall alone.
Kendall crossed her arms over her chest, watching you with a look that was part confusion, part frustration. "So... what's this about a party you didn't tell me about?"
You hesitated, your mind scrambling for a way out. "Nothing, I just didn't think you'd want to go, you know? It's not a big deal."
Kendall raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. "Not a big deal? You're literally planning your costume for it. Why didn't you tell me about it, what's the real reason, babe?" Her voice was calm, but there was an edge, like she already knew something was up.
You could feel the anxiety bubbling up in your chest. You hadn't wanted this conversation—at all. Not like this. You sighed, running a hand through your hair. "It's just... it's Iris's family party, and I thought it would be more chill if I went alone. I didn't think you'd be into it."
Kendall's eyes narrowed slightly, her voice turning sharp. "Why wouldn't I be into it? We've been talking about how you want me to meet your friends, and now that I actually have the chance, you don't invite me?"
Your heart raced. She was calling your bluff, and you knew it. Kendall had always been good at reading you, seeing through the little excuses you sometimes made when you didn't want to explain yourself. But this was different. This was... bigger.
You swallowed hard, feeling the weight of her words. "No, it's not like that—"
"Then what is it like?" Kendall interrupted, her frustration clearly growing. She took a step closer to you, her eyes searching yours. "Are you ashamed of me or something? Of us?"
