Chapter 13: Sleepless Nights

The room was shrouded in silence, the faint glow of the moonlight barely breaking through the heavy curtains. Y/N lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling, feeling the weight of yet another sleepless night pressing down on him. His body was exhausted, his muscles ached from lying still for so long, but his mind refused to rest. It had been days—long, agonizing days since Integra had left—and he had yet to sleep a full night.

He turned over onto his side, his eyes landing on the armchair in the corner of the room. Alucard was there, as always, watching him with an unnerving stillness. The vampire hadn’t moved all night, nor the nights before that. His presence, though reassuring in its own way, only added to Y/N’s restlessness.

He sighed, shifting in the bed again, pulling the blanket tighter around himself. The mattress, usually comfortable, felt foreign without Integra beside him. He had never realized just how much he relied on her presence to sleep. She had been his constant for as long as he could remember—her quiet strength and calm demeanor always made him feel safe. Now, in her absence, the house felt empty, and the darkness weighed heavily on his mind.

Y/N’s fingers gripped the edge of the blanket, his heart pounding louder in his chest the longer the silence stretched. He couldn’t take it anymore. He had tried everything—closing his eyes, deep breaths, even counting—but nothing worked. The exhaustion was there, creeping up on him, but sleep refused to come.

Alucard’s voice broke through the quiet, low and smooth, with an edge of amusement. “Restless again, I see.”

Y/N flinched slightly at the sudden sound, though he had been expecting Alucard to say something. He glanced over at the vampire, who still hadn’t moved from his spot in the corner. Those crimson eyes glowed faintly in the dark, watching him intently.

“I can’t sleep,” Y/N admitted, his voice sounding small in the vastness of the room.

Alucard’s lips curved into a slow grin. “You’ve been unable to sleep for several nights now. You’ll wear yourself out.”

Y/N rolled onto his back again, staring at the ceiling. “I know,” he muttered, frustration seeping into his voice. “But I don’t know what to do. It’s... it’s just different without Integra here.”

Alucard tilted his head, the amusement in his eyes shifting to something more contemplative. “You’ve grown dependent on her presence, it seems.”

Y/N didn’t respond, feeling a bit embarrassed by the truth of the statement. He hated that he was struggling so much without his sister around, but the truth was undeniable. He wasn’t used to being alone—not in this way.

The silence stretched again, and Y/N closed his eyes, trying once more to force himself to sleep. But the stillness of the room, combined with Alucard’s ever-watchful gaze, made it impossible. His mind continued to race, cycling through thoughts and worries, none of which he could escape.
